Planning a potential moose hunt in Newfoundland and was wondering what you all prefer for moose calibers? I currently have a xbolt in .308. Is this enough umpf for moose or should I be looking at something else? Thanks

308 should be enough gun, I will use a psa pa10 that I have build this winter to hunt this coming fall.

It is always the big IF, if you use GOOD Bullets and if you place the bullet into the heart lungs, a 308 will work. Just remember that moose are not hard to kill, but will run off with bullets in the proper location, as they are big animals and can go a long distance dead on their feet.

Just remember there is a difference from going on a moose hunt in being a local and going on a moose hunt in a new location. Your shots will probably be longer as you have a specific time line and are not out tramping around in the woods having a moose perched on your barrel.

Have probably seen 25 moose shot with 308 and not one ran more then 10 yards at most . Once we shot 2 moose a same time right next to each other 50 yards one 308 died in tracks one with 300 mag shot agin with 308 as it was running off have done same thing with caribou .

When I hunt I carry a 308 on front rack of atv and my 300 rum in case on back for them extra long shots but most moose are called in close and shot with 308 I find the solid copper bullets work good .

Shot my moose this year with a 7mm. Was a little odd, I shot him and he didn't do a thing, shot him again, same thing. I was beginning to wonder if I was missing when he started leaning, and oomph he went down. 308 should work good.

Was talking to a old pilot, we talked about some poached moose he had heard about, this was a long time ago, they had been shot with several .22 rounds. He also had met a gal sometime in his life who shot a moose once with a .22 because she was running out of food in the bush. She shot the moose once and it ran into the brush. She didn't find it until a few days later, it was floating down the river, all bloated. Amazing what that little round can do.

Tons of moose killed with a .303. .308 or .30-06 will do the job just fine.

Listen to Team V. I've been guiding hunters for 30-years now, and by far the biggest mistake hunters make is buying a new bigger rifle because they think they need it. You don't. Seen lots of moose killed with the 308. Lots with the 30-30 too. The 308 is as fine a round as any, many grizzly bears have been killed with it as well.

Moose will seldom go far when wounded. I've seen them go a long ways only very rarely.

No need for the Win, HH, and other magnums. 270 on up will work fine. Best shot on moose is lung shots. The darned moose is so big he can’t do much with a hole in his lung.

Keep shots away from the bones.Ventilate the Heart Lung area just behind the front leg.Couple shots if needed.Hitting the big bones wrecks meat and loses game.
I never figured why people say shoot for the shoulder.Unless you use a cannon I guess.
Seen plenty of wolves killed with 22lr semi,fair distance too,shots to the chest behind front leg.

I agree with the bone hits creating blood shot meat. Shoot for the lungs. Watch them wobble then fall. Some of the most blood shot meat I have seen were off of moose that dropped like a rock at the shot or from follow up shots because the bull was still standing after the first shot.
Yes, a .308 is plenty for whacking even the largest bull.

Yes, a .308 is plenty big for moose. I might get some flak here but the last three moose I have killed were with a .243. I used to use a .300 Weatherby Mag for distance and a 45/70 for the quick brush gun. When I got better at calling Moose, I didn't need to shoot over 150 yards. I down sized and have been really happy with that caliber. I use Barnes TSX Bullets and they go all the way thru a Moose.

Eureka I built a single shot 243 for the kids and it has put so much moose ,bear and caribou in the freezer . I have been thinking about getting one for my self . I have used a Remington model 7 308 for 20 years but the barrel is getting pitted and losing accuracy .

While I've never met Heimo K. I heard from a friend that does know him, that his preferred caliber is the 22-250, for everything including grizzly.

I have the Tikka T3 Superlite. It's a great firearm.

Sounds like you have the perfect moose rig, already. I agree completely with Boco's comments on shot placement. You don't want to waste any of that delicious meat. A 308 with 180gr. bullets won't likely make a mess of your moose.

My father has always been a big fan of shooting them directly below the hump to break the back. I have done it, my sister has done it, and most of my fathers sports have done it. Works well if the shooter is reliably accurate.

On the other hand............if you hit them in the hump they will still drop like a rock and jump right back up and run off.

I've been using the hump shot, right below the hump, on the last few moose I've shot. They drop right there, no running off to the closest water hole and piling up.
