This is a question i am aiming more towards houndsman. I used to carry a .30 Carbine in a Ruger #6 when dawgin' for bobs and lions. I no longer own that gun and it was great, just REAL loud. I shot the 110 fmj's for the bobcats and 110 spires for lions- loaded 3x3 in the cylinder and used fingernail polish to mark which loads were were.
I have used a .22 mag for lions but this is not good practice and is illegal in most states. i have always felt the .357 was to much for a bobcat. What do you folks think about the .327 Fed. vs .30 carbine for a dual purpose cat pistol ?

RR- i would agree if i were in Montana, Wyoming has these requirements. neither of the two calibers are legit for lions here, if i read the regs right. (section 4)

Guess i can pack the .22mag for the bobs and get something just for lions, and that would be a .357, rifles suck for packing on a western hunt with dogs imho, handling dogs and a rifle can be a task at times. But i still want a .327 Fed. cool

My .22 mag is am autoloader but would like a six with interchangeable cyl. Them V-Max bullets work pretty well for me in the .22mag

I have a 327. It's a hot little round and hits hard. I think it's around 400 ft lbs. of energy. But it also has some VERY serious muzzle blast. Ear plugs are a must. If your do your job and have good shot placement its bye bye kitty.

I say the 327 would work for what you are looking to do.Why I say that is because you can also shoot 32S&W,32S&W Long,32 ACP,32H&R Mag ,and 327 Mag. For something small on the line you can use what is smaller then the 327 and for the lion use the 327 if you like.It is nice round. I have a BH in it and shoot all the rounds I stated. I also reload for all of them also.As long you do your part also. Also i was going to use my on the trap line if the 22lr where to be like it was in the past and use 32S&W,or 32ACP for my trap line load and say the 327 for coyotes that if need to be use that was not trap.

Why wouldn't you carry the .357 for lions and run .38 Special with wadcutters or SWC for bobcats?

That .327 Fed is amazingly versatile, and I am considering two: the Ruger Single 7 and Henry's new .327 Lever. You can shoot 32 H&R Magnum or 32 S&W longs but I don't think the 32 ACP works. Regardless, the .327 Fed itself is about up to par with a .357 so that might not be your liking. 32 H&R is much less horsepower and easy to handle. Rally Hess has a recipe he shared with me for a beaver round that is the H&R in the SW 32 long velocities and doesn't exit, a low velocity 71 gr I think. Wanting to try that on coyote.

I have used the "cowboy" .38 S&W rounds, low velocity, on beaver. Hard not to have it go through.

When we had our wolf season, the .22lr was not enough IMO. That would be the key.

I think the Henry lever would be a nice woodland coyote and calling gun.

Ringbill5196 the 32ACP dose work ,because it is semi rim and I do shoot it in my 327 Blackhawk beside the others ones i stated. Yes Rally told me that he use his to shoot beaver. He told me because it get the job done faster for what he use it for. I shoot cast bullets in my and have a gunsmith make me a single shot rifle also.More of a Handy Rifle with a scope on it. That is way before Henry came out with the one they have.It just take the gun smith some time to get it finish. He did say this week coming up that was friday if things work out at his end.

.38 with a hard cast and reduce load just might work for bobcats. Seen one get it from a .357 and thought it was a little excessive on damage. That was with a 125 HP, the outcome was inevitable. i don't have to much experience with centerfire pistol rounds and bobcats and after re-reading the state regs i posted the .327 won't work. To keep it all based on packing a pistol and keeping in accordance with the state regulations i think you may be right. A T/C in .223 would definitely fill the bill.
