Just got done doing fleshing and stretching a muskrat that has 3 slight rips/holes in it from another critter. The eye region and tail have a bite mark and a BB size hole in the belly so I want to tan it for the cabin. I have done my research and tanned a couple coon pelts but I am curious if the salting and tanning formula (orange bottle) times should be a lot less time in between with rats having the thinner hide to work with.

Any type of a paste tan works good for rats and other small animals.

Be careful with the orange bottle. Back when I was testing out a bunch of different tanning formulas I used the orange bottle process on some coons, mink, and rats. They all came out fairly stiff and oily. I don't know the exact chemical process that the orange bottle uses, but I tend to have better results with solution tans and paste tans that have specific processes for busting up those collagen fibers in a pelt.

Good Luck!

I just tanned a mink with rittels ez100. Turned out quite nice. Definitely soft and pliable enough to be garment material once I'm done buffing and polishing the fur and leather. The instructions for my tanning agent says never over tan a hide. And it says that most hides tan in 20-24hrs. It also gives instructions for thinnker skinned animals, saying they should be fully tanned within 16-20hrs.

Seen a vid on YouTub where a guy used raw eggs to tan a few squirrel hides. Wonder how that would work on rats?

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

Eggs are used sometimes instead of a brain tan...I like Knoblochs Liqui-tan.

I saw that one too. Pretty interesting. Think I'm gonna give that a try with some squirrels myself.

i have a muskrat and weasel hide to be tanned as well, As i goofed on the weasel, ripped part of its skin off while skinning it, treating it like a mink and ripped it. as for the rat, i goofed on its ears, was`nt going to send them to auction. i have purchased the orange bottle a little while back, Just starting the tanning process today. See how it works, let you know how it turns out.

Do weasels tear as easy as muskrats?
I gave a muskrat to my uncle to tan. He had it looking great until he ended up tearing it.
