with a short chained trap, the coon may "rear up" on its back legs, then it has a straight up pull on the stake of a few inches. when it relaxes, the chain end connector slides back down to the ground. if the connector is a universal type or flat stake swivel, it will bite into the ridges on the rebar the next time the coon rears up, and will raise the stake another few inches, with another straight up pull. this is how the stake gets "jacked". if the ground is soft or wet, as the stake is jacked up higher, and the coon circles, the stake will spin in the hole, and wallow it out in the shape of a funnel, and eventually pull out. use either a chain long enough to prevent a straight up pull when the coon rears-up, or a chain end connector that wont bind on the ridges on the rebar. the easiest of these is the longer chain.

Put a cable on them . Loop in the end , around a tree, drop the trap
thru the loop, push it into the ground . catch coon.

That's what I have on ALL my foothold traps. I have extension cables I carry just in case.

You just reminded me of how I lost 7 stakes and traps this year. Thanks for the reminder on how to pull my head out.

That's why I want to be sure they hold good and not just that you lost the traps but now that coon has a trap stuck on his leg until he gets it off.

This is what works the best for me in my soil conditions and critter size. Rebar is 24 in" USUALLY one is enough to hold, but sometimes takes two. Welded an extender onto the vise grips so I can pull the stakes from a comfortable position.

Quicker than most other types of setting, much quicker than any other removal /relocation that I have found. Time might not be a consideration, but if you're trying to set 3-4 hundred it is. If you're trying to pull 3-4 it certainly is.
Stay Safe Out there.

I use 12” cabled superstakes and put them areas I can push them in by hand. Coons here don’t “pump” they just run side to side. Caught 3 in one DP before I pulled it up and moved it about 3’ down the creek. And when I say push in and pull by hand, it’s exactly what it means. Haven’t lost a critter in a DP yet. Now if I’m using a foothold and there’s a chance a bobcat or coyote could get caught there’s no way I’m using that method, I’d just use a drag instead.
