Nice Grey Mr. Ron! Here are a couple of remake post sets using a cow rib bone. As far as post sets go, you will be hard-pressed to find a more stark contrast than this. You can see a little lure on the leading edge of the rib where the bone has been worn down, and the porous cartilage has been exposed. This area holds lure extremely well. At every remake there is usually a remnant of a raised tuft of grass left inside the catch circle. I will place scat there every time regardless of where it is in relation to the post, lure, & trap.

Thank you Sir, Now how many of you think it is wise to have exposed traps at a post set?
I've seen it on her often and usually used in some kind of walk through, but is it practical to have the trap exposed at a rub set?
I made one two days back and connected this morning it was NOT an exposed trap, and all of the exposed traps I had set ended up with a possum in them.

This is not a traditional post set per se, but it elicits the same response. On the left is fairly fresh pig skull with a lot of good smell left on it. A little shot of urine on the skull, along with a natural walk-through is just what the doctor ordered. Most coyotes would have a hard time passing this up.

[img:left]http:// [/img] [img:left] [/img] Started my first year LOVING the premise of a dirt hole set and only connected on coyotes in my flat/post sets. go figure.
It’s a long road to wisdom. It’s a short one to being ignored.

Well I spoke yesterday about the cat I trapped in a post set. today I Found this at the remake... missed it by less than 1". That critter was on the dog and partly on the pan. I made a set about 6 yards away with some Sierra Mist applied to the post the way Bob said he does it, hopefully I will catch this cat tonight. For whatever reason that critter walked right through the set and never stuck around.

There was an abandoned set of roads on a base where I was trapping. The firehydrants were still there. I smeared a little castor on the hydrant and caught a yote. Buddy doubted me. I wish I had trapped when I was in. I spent 4 years at the Stumps and looking back I realize I could've had some fun trapping out there. Was that your only duty station? Sure is a ton of yotes out there. You coulda gotten spoiled!

Ken, there's surely no hard rule against an exposed trap at a post set but you generally want to cover and blend. You don't want attention on the trap. If your target is only cats then it matters less. Coyotes, reds, and even some grays will avoid that strange looking exposed trap very often.

Here's a little spin on the post set I've used here and there. It incorporates the use of a lower leg from a whitetail deer. The leg is sawed off just below the joint so the diaphysis is exposed. *Drill a hole straight down with a 1 ½ “ auger, then shove the leg in hoof first. *Give the leg a few taps with your hammer to seat the leg in the hole well. *Lastly, fill in and compress the dirt around the bone with your hammer to help hold it in place. I like to leave about 3-4 inches of the leg bone exposed. This is a great visual attractant that comes pre-filled with bone marrow goodness. This set resulted in the first night catch above. To take it one step further, I like to add a lure stick pressed down in the hollow where the marrow is. Set placement for above set. Once the marrow is gone, you can refill the diaphysis with bacon grease.

That's awesome. I wonder if bobcat legs will do for this.

That's awesome. I wonder if bobcat legs will do for this. Bobcat feet serve as excellent attractor for both cats and canines. Want to drive a coyote wild? Earth anchor that foot down deep so he can never get the foot out of the hole. It is deep and long enough that it stays vertical in the hole. It will wiggle, jiggle, and move and that absolutely drives a coyote crazy. Kind of like the fence post you need to pull out and it feels so loose that it MUST come out but you need to dig more.

John I'm gonna try that I'll post the results? James do you use urine at the deer leg post set? Would deer urine attract yotes?
