Picked up a Savage 99 in 250-3000 Ackley Improved. Anyone got any information on loads for this rifle? Thinking of loading 87 or 100 grain SP in it.
Also looking at information for reloading 257 Roberts Ackley Improved.

Join us at www.handloadersbench.com and www.accuratereloading.com and you could find someone with your exact rifle, which would shorten your testing considerably...it sure helped me.

What twist is your 257 ?

I own an old 50's early 1960's Remington 722 chambered in 257 Roberts. No info on the Ackley Improved, but always wanted to have mine Reamed for it. I shoot H380 and IMR 4064 in mine. Always liked 100gr bullets out of my 257 Bob.

A friend of mine called P.O. Ackley about load data for an 8mm~06AI. Mr.Ackley told him to fire form his brass, then with the bullets he wanted to develop a load with, start at the max load for a standard 8~06 and work up a 1/2gr at a time. LOL. True story. I can't help you with the 250~3000AI
but I built a 257Roberts AI I will be testing this spring. IF
I remember correctly IMR 4350 & IMR 4831 are the correct burn rates with 100gr bullets for that case to bore ratio. Load data is fairly common for the 257AI.
If you can't find it. Send me a pm and I'll send you some starting loads with the powder you choose. PS. load data for the 250~3000AI is in the Sierra #V manual and for the 257AI as well.

just don't push the pressures, the beauty of the ackley chamberings are based on a strong action, the strait walls and sharp shoulders just defy the measuring process, the shape of the case does not show actual bolt thrust pressures, when you see pressure signs in an ackley your almost dancing with angels when your running an action like the savage 99 or the 9 lug Remington 788. stay at least at book max or your action will suffer.

Ridge runner, The 250-3000 Ackley is in a savage 99, but the 257 Ackley is built with a Mauser action.

Check the twist rate of the barrel. Mine is a 1 in 14" and doesn't like heavier bullets. It really likes the 87gr Hot Core and does okay with 90 grainers. I can get some 100s to shoot acceptably. The Ackley being faster will probably favor lighter bullets. If you have the newer 1 in 10" barrel, it won't be an issue. Google how to measure barrel twist if you're uncertain.

Dead on.
First thing to consider when figuring out a load is your twist so you know what Gr. bullet for a starting point.
