The old metal spiles should be a 7/16 and the smaller 5/16 spiles use a 5/16 drill bit. You can go up/down a 64th in size if needed.

5/16 for the newer spouts. I like a Canadian tapping bit......Bascoms my preferred supply house.

If they are old taps especially with wire hooks to hold buckets then 7/16. I gradually switched out to 5/16 and see a noticeable difference in tree healing.

Lucky for me, I still use my grandfather's old brace and bit, chucked with a 7/16 bit. Only time of year I use it, and I use it because of the nostalgia.

I like the syrup, but the memories are much more valuable.

^^^^ And without them fond memories its not as fun! My gramps did it every year on his farm too. A way more simpler life I remember.

We started clearing a fence line last night and I left every maple I came across for hopes in the future to be able to tap some and enjoy the work with my kids. Most of mine down here are silver maples and I heard you just have to get more sap.
