Chinese steel presently sells for $45 a ton.

American steel presently sells for $75 a ton.

American government imposes a tariff of $40 a ton. This raises Chinese steel to $85 a ton.

American producers raise their price $9.99 a ton to $84.99 a ton.

Americans are now able to beat Chinese steel prices, but the tariff did nothing to save the consumer money.

And the government won't care because they collect revenue no matter what.

I'm not sure trump or any government economist is smart enough to diddle with tariffs to help this or that. I now understand tariffs better. They used to be a necessary evil to fund government. Now we fund government through outright theft of American wealth. If we decide to use tariffs to offset taxes, fine. However, let's not kid ourselves about the ability of government to shape or mold our economy. My state government, for example, cannot even print vehicle titles anymore. They spent 90 MILLION on a computer system that doesn't work. And we areally supposed to trust these people to guide our economy? Yeah right.
