Does anyone know of any good books sources on denning? I have O'gorman's "Hoofbeats of a Wolfer" where he discusses it but would like more guides on the subject. Any suggestions on what & where to find is greatly appreciated.

good way to find dens is with a dog or tracking and dont get too close. Locate the general area by calling. then get a dog in there. My supervisor yrs ago had a great dog named ben...he would run into the den area and then lead the coyotes back to the shooter A small dog like a heeler etc as the coyotes will charge the dog if its pup time or den time. A big dog can be too intimidating at times,,especially when decoying or calling. Use to be denners guides sold many many yrs ago, best way is to go with and learn.

You have to have a ton of experience In knowing the lay of the land where your trapping or denning. The dog thing Is a good Idea but you have to know where to let out the dog. And of course you need a trained dog to do It.

This year I'm going to have a real In on where coyotes are denning. We radio collared 12 of them last fall. So It's going to be interesting as to where they den and where they move to by trapping season.
They plan on digging some dens and ear tagging the pups. But that will probably mess up a normal fall shuffle.

To answer your specific question, there are a few books on the topic. The government actually published a booklet on the topic. John Ehn’s book is pretty extensive. There are also a lot of videos on You Tube that show denning work.

I know there's also a video either by J Ehn or Vern Dorn, I'd like to find a copy. Are you doing research? I'm a biologists in Oklahoma researching coyote diet on a ranch w/ an elk herd. I'm also a lokngtime trapper. I've been trapping the ranch & collecting tissues & stomachs - I've got 50 so far but I'd like to get scat from pups in the spring / summer to look at prey items brought to the pups. Are you going to examine fall dispersal & maybe den site use year to year?
Thanks for the info,
Brandon

I know a biologist in Georgia, Joey Hinton, who's been radiocollaring coyotes in the SE for 2-3 years now & looking at habitat use, dispersal, diet,........ They're discovering a lot that was unknown about coyotes. I'm just now starting this research in SW Oklahoma on 30,000 acre ranch that is next to the Whichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge where I have trail cam video of a coyote taking down a 400 lb elk & killing it. The coyotes in this small region are different than those in surrounding areas. The normal size of adult coyotes in Oklahoma range 25-40 lbs & ive caught 4 just this winter over 45 lbs, 1 was right at 52. The last gray & red wolves were killed in this exact area in the 1930's & nobody has tested these coyotes for traces of wolf DNA.

I'm happy to meet the son of H Lenon! In fact, I'm ordering the book about your dad's life of trapping.

I've trapped for 25 years but never learned denning & it would be a huge help in research. I'd enjoying visiting w/ the biologist your working with.
