I cross stake just about all my traps and that includes my CRs. There are some places where I use disposables.

My stakes are 16" long. I use to use re bar but now I've gone to 1/2" smooth rod. The smooth rod goes In so much better and comes out a lot better when the ground Is frozen.

I just got one of those old bumper jacks and I'm going to come up with some quick connect devise that I can just slip over the stake head and ratchet It out.
This crow bar and blocks of wood just don't cut It. The vise grips work pretty good for twisting them out but there has to be a better way.
I never pull disposables.
