Was talking with an old trapper from back in the day and he said he would cut muskrat tails into 1/2" pieces use them for bait in dirt hole sets for fox and coyote. Not sure if he used it alone or with other type of baits. Anyone tired this or heard of it before ? Going to try it this year. -Thanks

I haven't but have tried hanging whole tails at bobcat sets but never did witness any reaction to them.

It will probably work as good as beaver tail chunks which I sell out of very fast every time offered.

Wonder if the rat tails make oil like beaver tails do? (obviously wouldn't be the volume or at the speed as beav tails)

I've wondered about that for a while, I just don't catch enough rats to find out

It seems like whenever I throw out rat carcasses the only thing the scavengers leave is the tails. I've never tried them for bait just because of this though.
