often time when they swim up to a pathway or castor mound ,and decide not to commit they just slowly turn around on the surface of the water like they are on a turret . Since the tail sticks farther out the back than the head out the front it often comes in contact with the triggers of a BG trap set half under water . I've watched it happen at castor mounds .

Not in body grip, but I have caught a couple...




It would be interesting to see how the tail tore off. I'd guess just simple lack of swiveling.
