Hi, For a long time I've been looking for a bait recipe for predators that is not to hard to make and is half decently cheap, I can't find ANY! Please give me your ideas on which bait solutions are best and what to mix with them! Can you mix JUST meat with them? If you have any suggestions on what to mix with bait solution let me know, please Thanks everyone!

Easy bait. Rat or mice. Grind up in cheap blender till u get about 12 oz of it. Add 1 drop skunk essence(optional), 1/2 tbs of beaver lure(like Backbreaker), and about tbs of mineral oil. Then add your bait solution or preservative

I too have some Dobbin's Bait Solution, glycerin, urines, and a big bag of boned bobcat meat.
I have no clue on how to put it, or any other easy recipe, together.

I have no clue on how to put it, or any other easy recipe, together. For my Bait Solution - grind or chop up your cat meat. If you chop it up, make the pieces no larger than a hickory nut - the size of the nut without the hull. Let the meat taint to the degree of taint you want, if you taint it at all. Make sure you do this in a manner that flies will not get to the meat. Add bait solution to the meat. Dissolve the packet of sodium benzoate in a cup of warm water and add this to the meat/bait solution and stir thoroughly. Make sure no flies can get to it. Stir once a day for a week to ten days. If you have the meat in chunks it will take longer for the sodium benzoate to penetrate to the center of the chunks to kill the bacteria than if it is ground. Once the ten days or so have passed, the bait can be sealed, since there will be no more gas being given off by the bait.

Let me ask this, once I do this, and it gives me around a gallon of (I guess you might call it) generalized bait, do I then take small jars of like 12oz to make into somewhat specialized baits? I.E., add a drop of skunk, some beaver castor, etc...? Thank you Chad

Chad you can do whatever you want with it once it's done. It can be fun to experiment. Keep records of what and how much you added to the specialized baits. That way if one of them really outperforms everything else, you can duplicate it.

Thank you very much Paul. Now to search for tainting methods to keep flies out. I have 2 one gallon glass jars to use.

Thank you very much Paul. Now to search for tainting methods to keep flies out. I have 2 one gallon glass jars to use. If you don't have an Airlock, you can lay a pc of glass over the top of the glass jar. Gas can escape but flies cant get it.

I'll look for an airlock. That's a great idea but I wouldn't want a stray cat getting into it.

Thank you very much Paul. Now to search for tainting methods to keep flies out. I have 2 one gallon glass jars to use. I like using plastic buckets for tainting. Glass can break if the lid is on too tight. Some folks put the end of a tube through the lid and the other end weighted down in a container of water. You might want to calk where the tube goes into the lid if you don't have an airtight seal. This allows the gas to vent into the water while giving no place for flies to gain access to the meat. Some like to put one of those aquarium aerators on the end of the tube. I simply put the lid on the plastic bucket and place a weight on the lid. As the gas builds up, it escapes around the seal and the weight on top of the lid puts enough pressure on it to keep any gaps from forming that will let flies in. Sometimes I will find fly eggs around the bucket lid, so I wipe them off good before opening the bucket.

I've had great luck on coyotes with chopped beaver and Dobbins' Bait Solution. Nothing else added but you sure can. Another simple one is Jack Mackerel. Go here and enter Jack Mackerel in the Trapperman search box for a bunch of reading. The recipe from Hershberger's book is 2 cans of Jack Mackerel, 1/4 ounce tincture of asafoetida (get that from Paul here) and enough honey to make a paste. Mash up the mackerel, stir it all together and it's done.

I'll look for an airlock. You can also drill a 1/4" hole and tape 3 or 4 layers of scrap flannel shirt over it, as taught in Nick Wyshinski's book. Personally, I use lil aquarium air stones, and keep critters away from it.

It seems as though this bait making deal isn't as hard as I/someone might think that it is. It seems as though once you do it once you learn that in reality it is pretty easy.
Now I'm not taking anything away from the professional bait makers, their skills and time spent testing speak for themselves.
All that I'm saying is that for someone who's never done it, we might be over thinking it due to having never done it as well as our complete misunderstanding of what the term "Bait" truly means. We might be thinking that we have to make something as complex as the professionals when in reality that's not the case at all.

ive since then started using 5 gallon oil buckets. They have a rubber o ring in the lids! Prevents flys from getting in and lets gass out. Fly eggs will develop around the seam I just wipe it down with bleach kills eggs, and slows flys down

the more I formulate the more I come back to simple two ingredient mixs! Deer and pure quill road kill that's 4-5 days old grind course. 1/2 tsp eccense per gallon of meat no preservative maybe a pint of vegetable oil to keep it loose and pastey if its a warm season by the end its super loud! I prefer my deer to be green just under the skin! Its the one thing I find the yotes here find interst in during our never ending deer seasons! I start watching the ditchs in mid october

Bingo bango! This. When I switched from "store bought" bait to chunks of fresh meat,( deer, beaver, muskrat, rabbit) my catch rate doubled , almost tripled.
