Grawe"s has a seal oil imitation. I have some old coyote formulas that call for it.

I was going to trade skunk essence to an Alaskan for some a couple years ago. called the sea mammal something or other in Alaska and found out its not legal to ship even if you barter for it and don't pay money. Supposed to be legal to barter but not to a white guy in KS I guess.

FWIW beaver tail oil is supposed to work as a replacement in old formulas

Adam Potaczek on here sells some imitation seal oil through his Trapper Arts Supply company that he makes himself. Been tempted to buy some just to see what's it about.

Seal oil is not a make or break ingredient. Some feel or think that these ingredients will make a product much more effective then other ingredients, however I dont find this to be the case. Many options are available with respects to choices of ingredients. It is more understanding their function and effect on the target animal.

Dont get the idea that you are missing something or will have an inferior product by not useing some old school products that are not readily available, legal or cost effective. There are far to many things that are available that will more then make up for such by gone era ingredients.

But your forgetting the confidence factor. And since It's Illegal to posses It must be the hot Ingredient. LOL

I agree muskrat. That whole pack of nonsense is the result of fur seal harvest in Canada. Never could figure out why if killing seal pups was so devastating, how come the world still had lots of them. Its been going on for centuries.

another no fact, emotion based legislation

Your best confidence factor is setting on location using a tampon for bait. Nothing like some tainted beaver blood on a lure holder.

Please don't give trappers any ideas!!!! Heaven knows we get into enough trouble on our own without someone feeding us ideas like this.

Having said that, I actually tried the afore-mentioned devices one year as lure holders on my cat line. In the past 12-15 years, I have only been checked for a valid trapping license in the field by a game warden twice. One of these license checks came while checking a cat line on which I was thoroughly testing these items as lure holders. I still recall the look on the warden's face (a warden I know quite well since he usually assists with the bobcat tagging process at the end of the season). As he was looking at my license, he asked, "Is that your set up there under that rock in the canyon to the right?" I said, "yes, I assume I'm the only one with a set up there." He was staring at my license with kind of a scowl on his face and then finally asked, "Did I see what I think I saw hanging from that bush by your set?" I stuttered and stammered a few times and then responded, "Why yes, its a new lure holder I'm testing. For a lure company (I lied). As an experiment. Just at this one location. Honest."

He handed me back my license with kind of a "it takes all kinds" sort of look on his face. About a year later, I was at a regulatory meeting where I had to give a formal presentation and as I stepped to the lectern, I saw this same warden had drawn the assignment to attend the session and represent the wildlife agency. The whole time I was giving my presentation I was thinking, "Man, I probably sound pretty legitimate to this group but over there is a warden who is saying to himself, 'how can you give any meaningful weight to an argument made by a guy that wanders around the mountains hanging tampons from bushes . . . .?'" But he was polite and didn't say anything.

LOL, Back when I was guiding bear hunters in Idaho, we had girlfriends and friends' wives saving THEM to put with the stale bakery pastries in our baits.

Does it matter if you use the heavy day ones? How about plastic tip or the wood tip?

x2 I have 3 formulas that call for the real stuff. Pretty sure Glen Hanson had some connections in Alaska.

No no no! The pads are best used for geese decoys. Just be sure it’s the ones with wings...

I've used seal oil, primarily in Lynx lure.
Salmon oil seems to work just as good.

You guys joking about tampon use must not be aware that this was a common practice with trappers back in the depression era. There is even an old saying that derives from that practice.

" Well, if that don't take the rag off the bush" !!!
