Jaywalking idiot with the drink complicated the situation and seemed completely oblivious to his surroundings. Or he was in total sync with his surrounding after living there for years and having dealt with thousands of train interactions.

I guess it's lost on you, but his jaywalking down the street and in the way of the escape route of the car prevented the car from pulling forward to the side of the train...which is why the driver was flustered.
