You can try a number of things. Many of them may break something. Contact Savage. They are reputable and should be able to help you resolve it. I would take it back to where I bought it first.

What Carl said. Other than checking for a bolt screw or pin loose, or trying to retract the bolt while holding the trigger down, I wouldn't want to put much pressure on it. If I was in an emergency, last ditch effort, I might lift the bolt handle as much as possible and tap it backward with a small wood mallet. It may be a deformed case and the extractor is engaged on the case and can't pull it out. Best thing--contact Savage, you'll probably need to send it to them.

Before you walk into the gun shop with it, walk in without the rifle and tell the owner/gunsmith what happened and that you want to hand him a gun with a live round in the chamber. No surprises inside the store that way.

Good luck,

Pete

I would say that there is an issue with the ammo you’re using. Mainly the sizing of the brass @ the shoulder or possibly even the neck. Is it a live round? Or fired case? Many gunsmiths want to know this before you walk in the shop with a live round in the chamber. And maybe won’t allow it? If the bolt handle will lift fully? A couple light to moderate raps with a mallet or deadblow hammer should at least get the bolt removed. Once the bolt is removed, stand the rifle up vertically on it’s butt stock. Pour some Kroil (available from Midway) down the muzzle. Allow it to soak for a couple days. Then you should be able to remove stuck case/round with a cleaning rod. This has worked for me in the past. If it doesn’t come out at that point? May require having the barrel removed in order to extract it. That’s where a competent gunsmith or rifle builder will come in handy.
Also check the extractor for damages.

I'd open the bolt and put a rod down the barrel and tap that shell out this putting most of the force on the empty shell if something breaks it was going to break anyway or is already broken!

1 in a 1000 bullets is bad that is a expected result by the industry standards. When getting a new box of bullets the training is to take the barrel off (duty weapon) and cycle every bullet in the box by hand to see if any are over sized rather then finding that out later when the gun jams when needed.

Sounds like a hot load the may of split the case if so keep the batch number from the end flap on the box and let the bullet maker be aware if that is the issue. Hot loads you don't know until you fire them hope it's not cheap ammo in a new gun?

Pete,
I did not think he meant the 6th round went in but was not fired when he tried to open the bolt. If that is the case--whole different animal. I wouldn't want to do anything with it but hand it to a pre-warned gunsmith or a Savage rep. in person.

It is a fired round not low end but not top of the line either

And the gun was bought at a combo gun shop/ pawn shop where I do a lot of business m
They do have a gunsmith there so it looks like I might be taking a trip over there to consult with other him

Once pulled the rim off a case trying to extract it. Smith pulled the barrel and put it in a freezer overnight. Used a wooden dowl to punch it out the next morning.

I bought a Savage MSR in .224 Valkyrie back in January and by April I had already sent it back to savage for blowing primers. Just got it back last Friday. Never could get a straight answer as to what exactly was wrong in the first place. They were very hush hush about the issue...my guess was headspace/cylinder bore was off but nonetheless I am not impressed with the level of customer service I received.

Sounds like a head-spacing issue to me.
It seems like I've been hearing a lot of head-spacing issues in recent years with new rifles. Sounds like QC is taking a back seat recently.

Make sure the bolt is lifted all the way up. Sometimes on a hot round it is hard to lift the bolt the last little bit. Hit it up a few times with a rubber mallet. Then hit it down. It will either extract or the extractor will slip off the rim. If the extractor slips off the rim and does not extract then it is time to drive the case out with a rod down the barrel. Be careful of not bending the rod placed down the barrel or you could damage the barrel taking it out. The case that was removed may tell you the problem. If not then clean the chamber real good with fine steel wool. Make sure the chamber isn't very oily and try it again. Rusty chamber or a hot load could be the problem. Of course there are other things.

That worked got the bolt open leaving the shell stuck in the chamber then got the shell out it was split up the side from the rim to about half way to the shoulder

sounds like you should be complaining to the factory ammo manufacturer for the hot round or bad case.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Bingo Savage won't cover bad ammo issues but the ammo mfg might!

I do plan on contacting the MFG though so far can not see any damage but I plan on having the gunsmith take a look at it Monday just to be sure

I did cycle a couple of spent shells through it but not any live rounds just to be safe as I did not want to chance having a live shell hang up in it
