To old houndsmen plotts will always be curs no matter what name change the registry does. Same goes for the flag tailed leopards.

There aren't lots of houndsmen within 4 hours drive of here as there is no public ground. Only guys that drag them things up north once a year for the deer hunt.

Just happy to be here.

Interesting, Plotts have always been hounds around here. They sure are good looking pups!

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

I get it on the Leopard dogs as they were only registered as hounds a few years back. Plotts on the other hand have been registered as hounds by UKC since 1946. They are reported to be out of stock that first arrived here from Germany in the 1700's. Has a shot of cur or some other mix been bred into some? Probably, but then who knows what's really flowing through the veins of some of the other coon hound breeds either.

To me Plotts are hounds. I understand they maybe aren't as long eared and saggy skinned as an old Vaughn bred Bluetick, but look at some of the squeaky mouthed 40 pound Walkers that guys are hunting these days. They are still registered as hounds. I also realize that Plotts weren't descended from the old fox hounds like the other modern coon hounds (minus the Leopards), but they can grub out an old track and push a tough bear or mountain lion up a tree with the best of them. Don't think for a second they can't make a good coon hound either. They aren't the most common coon hound by a long shot, but I have seen some good ones. To be fair I have seen some junk in the Plott breed as well, just like all the other breeds. Let's not forget the 1988 UKC World Hunt was won by a Plott named Kansas Sizzling Heat. To get that title he beat many a high dollar hound in the woods. A friend of mine drew old Heat in a hunt once and told me that dog was 100% a coon hound, and could absolutely fly on a track. This friend of mine that hunted with Heat was a very avid competition hunter who campaigned his Blueticks for years in hunts across the country. Bottom line, he knew a good hound when he saw one.

Anyway call them what you like, but I think those are some nice looking pups. I hope they get in the hands of some hunters and are given the opportunity to develop into some good hunting dogs.

I've also never heard a plot called anything but a hound. Built totally different than cur dogs, imo.

Every boy ought to have a hound to look for in the middle of the night.

Grew up in blue ridge mountains of virginia until 18.....raised with hounds. Plotts and black and tans were fantastic bugle voiced mountain dogs and great on bears and coons. You could hear those voices thru the hills. Not showing him the pics,he wants a dog,and deserves one. Just not the right time. He also wants a baby brother(not sister)

Plotts originated near where I live in Wayensville, NC (the Plott Balsam mts.). It was by a group of Germans and they may have brought them from Germany. If I'm not mistaken it was by the same group that brought the Russian boar over here and they used the plotts on the boars and bear around here. Growing up here everyone thought they could breed a plott to a Pitt and have a top notch hog dog???

You both got it right, including bringing boars. I love a good gritty Plott. It's the other way around, the curs have Plott's in them. Both great dogs the curs where more of a family dog and the Plott's are mainly a big game hound.

I always figured the Leopards had more July in them than cur. Julys come leopard and every other color. Flaggy tailed Julys are all hound. The flag tail goes back on the old Irish blood, that came over as Mountain and Muse which were Kerry Beagles, nothing like the beagles of today, but a fast, tough fox hound.
