Notice the brand new "Lee Steinmeyer parallel knife" above the beams. Can't wait to put that to use!

It's a decent knife. I really like the handles on it. The blade doesn't hold an edge all that well though. It comes really sharp and it works, but mine needed to be touched up a couple times last season.
The Steinmeyer knife seems to be A LOT better, but I haven't used it yet. I'm sure I won't be disappointed though.

Not to mention, the Steinmeyer knife is only $10-$15 more.

Pine worked good for me as far as making it better gave it 3 coats of epoxy resin smooth as glass and hard, also does not absorb water or grease and wipes clean. I would use the resin even on hardwood just makes it better.
