A probable second hatch showed up Monday. A friend that lives 7 miles east of me on Lake Ontario saw an estimated 500 near the end of a rain storm with 40 mph wing gusts out of the northeast. He said they were swirling together up and down not far from shore, then back and forth inland before landing in several scattered large clumps on nearby maple trees.
I did not see that, but did see a group of about 50 Monarchs early this afternoon fluttering back and forth and landing on the leaves of a maple tree close to the lake where I live. I wasn't able to catch them all in one frame, but was able to focus on a split group of 25 moving around in a strong 25 mph north wind - no rain since yesterday.
The photos below include only 11 and 6 butterflies - the best I could do in the wind after a one half hour session.
