It ticks me off that an Alaskan can't travel down the Alcan Highway--built by the US Army Corps of Engineers during WW II--with our firearms to the Lower 48, simply because Canada has draconian gun laws.

The new drivers license covers entry to Canada Is that the same one that say USA on it in the corner of the card? They say that all 50 state need to change to that by I think 2020.

I've also heard that if you have a Driving While Intoxicated on your record you cannot get into Canada. Story is around here, some group of fishermen tried to cross the border, two were told NO and had to wait at border for somebody to pick them up. I don't KNOW this, I've heard this. But it might be worth checking out if it applies.
Very much true. Osky

You do not need a passport. I asked the last time across. The Canadian border agent even confirmed my suspicions when she said the US will say that you need one one for readmittance, however they can not deny you access back in to your own country. So no to both sides. For 20 years I was a merchant mariner travelling from us to Canada and have pretty thoroughly checked this out including rehabilitation. At one point they were pulling crew off the ship and detaining them. They required a crew list before docking and checked every ones background. This was for crew staying aboard and not trying to go through customs.

I find it curious that you would ask a Canadian border agent about the requirements to get into the US. Also, regarding your next statement - they can not deny you access back in to your own country - how do the border folks know what "your own country" is without a passport or some other official document. I'm willing to bet there are United States citizens that have been denied reentry into the US.

Mostly people owned by the queen of England. Keith That's what i thought. Doesn't there Prime Minister get down on his knees and swear an oath to the Queen before taking office ?

wissmiss, I did not ask her requirements to get back into US. She made that statement after telling me a passport wasn't required for entry into Canada. As far as having an official document for reentry into the US, yes of course you do, a passport is not required as the only official government document accepted. What started the conversation with her was my asking if I could use my merchant mariner credential issued by the US govt, same size and shape as a passport, same magnetic strip, same print, different color. They would not use it as official ID event though your mmd requires background info and is much more difficult to get than a passport. I have a friend who had to spend several hours in "no mans land" between the borders outside of Haines AK. He was turned around at Canada, they must have called the US side to let them know he was coming, the AK side probably checked his background and there he sat until he got re-admitted. He had some criminal stuff going on.
Also they made a movie about a US citizen being denied entry. Cheech Marin in Born in East LA
