My surplus guy has plenty of gear. And has mentioned no crack down or shortage to me.

Try harbor freight for ammo cans cheap. As a matter of fact they have them on sale for $2.99 right now. just these are the poly ones but I do plan on stopping in for a few , it is amazing how fast you find stuff to fill up all available ammo cans , just remember to label on the outside fleet farm had 4.49 50 cal plano plastic cans a few years ago , bought a bunch of them and been waiting for another good sale someplace just recently ran out of cans. my local hardware store is wanting 11.99 a can for 30cal metal used which isn't horrible other than they look like fair servicable condition not good the larger ones like 20mm they want 40 dollars for in serviceable but not good condition

PSA armory had the .50 Cal ammo cans built by a US contract supplier for $7.50 last year I bought a few cases. Your right real US surplus has dried up in many places most "surplus" places now are loaded with cheap imported camping gear and other junk from China today.
It gets harder and harder to find the USGI BDU pants any more and then they wanted $30 for the knockoffs and the adjusters don't even hold like the "real" ones.

I've had problems with them in the past, (involving ammo cans and FedEx) and I hate to send you to them, but, Sportsman's Guide has tons of ammo cans and all different sizes. If you spend the $40 and join the "Buyers Club" And wait for the sales, you can get some deals, WITH free freight. www.Sportmansguide.com

With the 20mm cans with good seals would anyone feel comfortable storing ammo in a shed without temp control. It would be in the dry. I was just wandering how ammo would stand up to the heat and cold for long periods of time.

I picked up some of the 2.99 (with coupon )plastic cans from harbor freight , they are not as nice as the Plano plastic or real gi but at that price for sitting on the shelf holding things that get out just a few times a year they work.

What is the going rate on the 30 cal and 81mm boxes? depends on condition between 8-11 dollars with about a 10 dollar average for 30 cal cans 50 cal cans have been re-purposed as 5.56 stripper clip cans so they are a little more plentiful and are around 10-12 dollars for some in good shape the big deep cans are running 20-40 depending how big
