Hunting doves between a lava flow near hells half acre and a corn field and came across a porky who probably thinks he died and went to heaven.Usually grain or spuds in these fields, first ever corn.these porkies typically get a bit of alfalfa or green vegitation along the lava flows, then get by on junipers and grass growing in the deep cracks through the winter.
I don't know if he is eating corn, but he is hiding in it and getting a good bath regularly, he did not smell at all.

Many here do not realize it but they are a protected species in my state now !

Used to be every where when I was younger, now not so many around, neat to see them once in a while, they can be very destructive though.

People would shoot them on site because well they could I guess !

Shot them out of my grandparents apple trees when I was a kid and there was a lot of them. Now I see only 1 or2 a year, too many coyotes and people.

They're like squirrels up here...everywhere and can be very destructive to trees. I've shot 5 out of my two apple trees this summer, and they're still coming. My nightly porky patrols are wearing thin on my patience.

you'll learn to hate them if you have dogs. Saw one dead on the road today. If you thought coons got hit a lot, porkys are like car magnets.

We don't have as many here in the central part of the state, as there are where I'm from in the Adirondacks. They'll chew up axe handles, canoe paddles, anything with a little salt on it. I had one chewing his way around my trapping shack up there for the salt/chemicals in the stain. I put a stop to that.

Cool picture, thanks.

Looks like a young one, they don't have the smell that a mature one does.

Dogs found one the other day I was there and got them off of it before they got quills. That one won't cause that problem again.

This photo is lousy, but near 50 years ago I had a pet porcupine. He was a real hoot.

Dark one there ours are more of a blond color here! I always like to toss small sticks at their tails to see them flick the tail at the side it hits on.

Plenty of YT vids on porkies eating corn. "Talking" the whole while as well. I prefer 'em in vids to my dog bringing 'em to me.

That little one I had as a pet jabbered non-stop. They make some wild whine/grunty/mumbly talk.

I caught that little snot in Oneida co. Wisconsin.

I had a little one on a tree trunk several years ago about a foot off the ground whining like a banshee. It's mother was in the crotch of the tree looking like any mother would with a screaming kid. So I took my flashlight and pealed the little guy off the trunk, still screaming until he finally realized he was on the ground. The mother then backed herself down the trunk, and they both waddled off into the woods as the little one did its mumbly talk...as you point out. Funniest animal encounter I've ever had.

Lot of the big male fishers trappers catch have quills in them. For some reason fishers are able to deal with the quills better than some other species or maybe they just don't sweat the small stuff.

Fisher are just faster and can kill them by biting their head...

When I was younger I saw a porky waddling around near the road. Stopped and got out to mess with it since we never used to see them much. I figured i would head it off so it stayed on the road and I could look at it.

Well, as soon as I got in front of it, I realized that they could run backwards just about as fast as they can run forwards

Just about that time I stumbled and fell backwards. So there i was, a porky running backwards at me swinging its tail, as I backward crab walked through the brush...

A few tense moments as it got closer and closer to my crotch, then reversed direction and ambled off...
