What's the story with the cabin? How old is it?

That cabin was built by a well respected elder in our region. He has passed away and the cabin still stands at the mouth of the bear creek where it meets the rat river. Not sure the exact age but it was still being used when I was a teenager. There is a new cabin just across from the old cabin. It was most likely built as a resting spot for caribou hunters although there is lots of other animals running around that neck of the woods.

That cabin was built old style with no floor the first guy there in the fall would be responsible for cutting spruce bows for the floor. After that people would have to refresh the floor as needed. Its surprising the floor is not much higher up the walls by now. Maybe the last guy there had to throw the branches back out before he left.

The cabin on the other side has squared logs with an Alaska mill. they look cool but the logs really shrink as they dry and there are some big cracks between the logs. Last time I was there with Ryan he put too much wood in the stove and I apprettiated those air holes.

Another 8 marten were added so Ive now got 47 there. I had a great hunt with the family and a good trip to Edmonton. Me and my son flew home on the 19th and I immediately got ready to fly out for one last geese hunt with my buddy Greg (We went through college together) We brought home about 80 cleaned birds after catching the tail end of the main run. It going to be a long wait for that again but I will be heading out tonight for rats and beaver.

Wish we were on the flyway. We get a few spring birds but not very many. My youngest daughter and her husband were just up in your country Ryan. They saw a lot of cranes up there. We see them flying over by the thousands every fall, but not in the spring so they must take a different route going north. Never have seen one on the ground either. We are heading out to the lodge soon, have a good summer!

I made a few more martin boxes, dried some frozen pelts and bought a second hand bench swager for making snares. Other than that its been pretty quiet. Cant wait for the nights to get dark again. That's when the caribou start tasting normal again imo. Then comes moose hunting and so on and so forth...

I got a deal to helicopter up to my camp for a couple days. Go on Saturday, fix around, clean-up, explore up the creek a little ways. Check if there is any grayling fishing up there. Should be a good time. Too bad it is not September I could have got a bear and made my money back on the charter.

A picture is worth a thousand words and my 2014-2015 journals were lost to the recent site clean up. Little disappointing as there was some stories and a bunch of good pictures but it’s alright. Still have the pictures around somewhere. Main story I wish I had saved was the one about my nephew getting his first caribou at the age of seven.

I'm sure you will find the pictures from the caribou hunt with your nephew and will write down the story about it. My oldest grandson and I are planning a elk hunting trip this fall he's 9 now and really likes hanging out.

Good luck Allen. I’m sure at some point I’ll look through my old pictures and post them all again. Some trapping pictures were erased from my camera because I thought I could always see them on here. I’ll have a few bear, wolf, caribou, Wolverine, etc pictures to post though.

That would be great Ryan I don't know of anyone who doesn't enjoy your pictures and journal.
Taking young kids out just makes it even better, watching them discover and learn is about as good as it gets !

I am 3 for 3 with the 270BDL so far this fall. I hunted alone first trip and shot 2 big bulls at 10am as they fed in a clean gravel and grass creek. I took my time and enjoyed the day taking 5 hours total to get both back to my truck. shot them both square in the neck and got everything out in 4 loads. Excellent walking/packing on the very level gravel and tundra.

Second trip wasn't as easy. Very few bou around besides little ones so we walked to a far ridge where about 25 caribou with 7-8 big bulls were hanging out. Again we snuck in perfectly and took the first bull to offer a safe angle with a clean head shot as several more walked by in easy bow range. Having my buddy Greg to share the weight made it easier and we made a load each BUT over very awful uneven swampy tundra for a total of about 7 km. We were both very thankful I didn't shoot any more that trip.
Now to get ready for some serious caribou hunting in my hometown. Thinking about going boating this evening too. Hopefully find a bull moose standing on the river bank somewhere. Very cool weather today.

Find a nice dry log up on the bank put up an awning, make a quick blind out of sticks. Put Ernest Monias, Standing buy the River on loop. Have some tea and drymeat with "I Cant believe Its not butter". Moose will come right out to you. Nothing can resist Ernest Monias. If that fails try your cousin Fagen's CD.

That sounds like a good way to hunt moose but the trick is to say your hunting something else. Moose on every corner then.

Yeah I like to say I'm picking berries. I'm sure shacking the debris out of my picker attacks moose.

Well fellas here we are in September already. Hunting has been slow due to work and bad timing (AND BAD SHELLS) but we still have a way to go. I managed to trade in my f150 for an f350 while keeping monthly payments around the same. Leaves are at the peak of their fall colors and should start falling soon. My son Bobby has started junior kindergarten and he likes it so far, wants me to call him school boy at home now. My oldest Morgan has started grade 3 and my youngest is growing and keeping us busy. Hopefully a herd of caribou shows up again before the rut starts because I haven't put much away up to this point.
I could use another 10-12 big bulls for the family. If not then there are plenty of moose to hunt and I only have to go 10 minutes from home by boat or truck before I start watching out for the swamp donkeys. Once my freezers are full I can think about some fall camping and family hunting trips. Im sure the 2 older kids will be along on a boat hunt soon. I really see a lot of myself in Bobby as he learns about hunting and trapping. Just yesterday he was trying to make a goose caller out of an empty bottle of cranberry juice.

Are you allowed to shoot cow caribou, I noticed you referred to shooting bulls? How is the caribou herd doing in your area?

Waggler- The porcupine herd is around 200,000 right now. In the Gwichin language we have words for every age and sex of caribou. When I say cows Im not saying any random cows from a herd. Im talking about old dry cows that have past reproduction age. Once they stop having calves they don't have to share their energy anymore and that makes them fatten up better. You can tell these cows from the others by their antlers which also grow a bit more massive and "bushy" thanks to the extra energy at their disposal.
