Depends possibly on abundance of typical muskrat food. I had a crick on one of my mink lines where the main food source for muskrats were snails. Snails were a year around food source where the acorns would be seasonal and maybe not every year.

Was that crick in your neck? You can pronounce creek any way you wish, but spelling is fundamental (I saw that on Sesame Street when I was a kid before all of those muppets came out of the closet). smile
The muskrats around here thrive on muscles in the salt marshes and in ponds. I am not surprised to hear about them eating snails. Are they leaving cracked snail shells to indicate that they ate them?

I would be surprised if they didn't. Almost everything eats acorns.

yes ive watched them eating acorns! at first I thought they was eating rocks. It was on a gravel bar on the river. They would dart out of the river up on the gravel bar then scoot back to the water then sit in the riffle and crunch away

If spelling is fundamental Carl then you should know that it's mussels not muscles. Your biceps are muscles.

The crick was located in central minnesota northeast of little falls. Yes there were cracked ‘nests’of snail shells along the edges.

And they also eat each other. Nothing better for rat bait then a rat shank pined up under the bank. And you might also catch a few mink and coon.

they will also catch and eat fish. I have seen them pile them up like a mink in a hatchery. thought it was mink until I saw them doing it.
