I’m brand new to trapping coons and I’ve seen most guys use dogproofs for coons. I’m looking to get could springs since they are cheaper and I can gett more as opposed to dog proofs. What are some good coon sets using coil springs. Thanks!

Pocket sets are great. If you look in the water trapping archives there are a lot of good posts on coon.

Welcome bud. We set more coils and longs for coon than we do dog proofs. Dirtholes and flats for dryland sets with some blind sets too. Pockets, blind, and grasswads for water sets. We run some 160s in tight trail spots and some cages too. DPs are just one tool for us but we have found our catch rate is much better if we run a variety of sets and traps. Example one farm last year...only four out of twelve coon from just that farm came from DPs. Cages, coils, and 160s took all the others. And that played out for us like that at six other farms too. One farm DPs were never touched, but the dirthole set and 160 down along same trails took everything. And there were fresh coon tracks right by the DPs at times, right under their noses. If we hadn't put other sets and baits, lures (or in case of the blind set 160s no bait or lure) we would have had no coon off of that farm. That would have been frustrating because sign said they were there. I don't know why for sure, but we just have to run multi sets and traps here on our lines to keep our catch rate up.DPs are a part of that but by no means are they our only coon trap. Jim
Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Trailing setting with 1/2s is my go to for coon. I use DPs and 160 but will have probably 4 times as many 1/2s out. Lots of info here on T-man about trapping coon.

I failed to mention in my previous post that all my 1/2s I set for coon are DJs. I have the old victors made in the early 80s. I think their making the same trap again now. But like many things I don't think their the same quality. I have made a few myself from plain 1/2s. The 1/2 DJs are very versatile as other have stated.. Not only good for coon can be used on mink, muskrat and if need be fox line. I've even held couple of coyotes that stumbled into them.

I've caught hundreds of coon in coil spring & longspring traps. I use mostly Sleepycreek 1 1/2 coils & #11 double long springs, also Sleepycreek. The sets I use are mostly trail or blind sets. Occasionally I put in a pocket set or a dirthole. Time is monney, that is why I set a lot of blind sets underwater where the coons are walking around stumps, rocks, trees, or overhangs. In my opinion I catch fewer possom in blind sets in water.
