Yep, the young guide can kill ptarmigan with a .22 pistol, but Sue can't hit one with a rifle or shotgun. She's always talking about how a predator would like to eat her. I certainly wouldn't eat her.

Not to change the subject but does anyone know why they took Yukon Men off the air or canceled it?

Well, I can't badmouth Sue, she is a tough gal and I think the Beav is sweet on her. He takes these long trips to Ak and would not be surprised if he shows up on the silver screen with her on one of these episodes.

Sue is a lot tougher than most...man or woman. Being chewed up years ago by a Griz and left for dead does make her jumpy and paranoid- it would do that to most.

I watched It last night. Can't remember the guys name but he caught a wolverine. Then went back to the cabin to put It up. Then he proceeded to flesh It with a pocket knife. There was so much fat left on that hide it would have never dried.

Everyone here has to abide by the same fish & game laws regardless.....with the rare exception of marine mammals for a very few people

Would you consider traveling to Kavik and teach her how to shoot so she could hit something and not starve to death?

This thread has progressed much better than the one a few years ago when the show first started up and a stalwart T-man participant became concerned about why Chip's wife had a "bar code" tattoo on her chin.

Some aspects of Inupiat culture seemed to have eluded that fellow.

LOL!!

Who wants to live like your life is on the line 24/7/365?
We do have a choice...
Honestly - if she would just cease all the drama, I'd give her a break.

I'm done - rant off

BTW - when I fished the Deschutes river in Oregon with my nephew who lived in Salem, he said that Native Americans can keep all the trout they can catch.
For Caucasians is was catch and release. Go figure...

If the same laws apply to everyone, how do those guys that use a fish wheel get away with taking hundreds of salmon with it? Isn't there a limit on the daily and possession limits?

Not under subsistence regs. Some communities are NOT designated as subsistence but ethnicity is not a factor. Whether I use a set net, drift net or a fish wheel, I can take as many salmon as I want ....unless there is a closure on a certain species of salmon. That's the case now with king salmon on several drainages. But that is being addressed by gear limitations and closed periods up and down the drainage as fish move upstream.

Subsistence rules and laws are a bit convoluted. Under State law there are areas that are designated subsistence areas. Other areas, generally more populated areas are not. Under State rules all Alaskans are eligible to participate in some form in subsistence in subsistence areas. For instance for many years many urban subsistence hunters could hunt subsistence moose in my back yard and I was ineligible because it is a scored draw ( known locally as "The Liars Contest"). Any Alaskan can participate in the area open to fishwheel subsistence here with an annual limit per household.

It seems those who have sled dogs, a lot of the fish is to feed them. Andy is one that comes to mind. He evidently qualifies for the subsistence you're referring to.

All subsistence opportunities throughout the State are not managed the same.

Not nearly as much as in the old days. Back when dogs were the main mode of winter transportation, I suspect hundreds of thousands of salmon and whitefish were dried for dog food. Even back in the 1980's I would put up close to 3000 fish each summer for dogs and humans
