Is there any poisonous mushroom that can be mistaken for a giant puffball about the size of a volleyball?

The word I've got is NO. Nothing looks like a Puffball.

Those giant ones are pretty much foolproof. However, before eating smaller puffballs you should slice them lengthwise to make sure that they aren't just an unopened mushroom of another variety; like a death angel (Amanita verna) or some other toxic variety. If you see any signs a stem, gills, etc, rather than just a solid white puff ball, don't even think about eating it.

It is that time of year and those are some dandies. Couple years back my brother inlaw gave me several slices frozen in zip locks. He finds them right in his yard some years. I think my freezer still smells like them even now. Those were strong and I can kind of take them or leave them not high on my list. I've found them at times when out checking traps. Know a couple spots now where there maybe some almost every year. Those I never picked them for myself but have give them to others. Got to admit I've walked by more than I've ever picked.

They were pretty fun to throw at each other when we were kids. Especially after they start getting soft and slimy. I also agree with Ack. You can make em taste like whatever you want.
Boco couldn't catch a cold. But if he did, it would be Top Lot.
