Hey all,

New to the forum here. I'm from IA and wanting to reach out to some out of state hunters seeing if there's any interest in hunting with our family on our farm in IA. It's highly managed and as low hunting pressure as you can get (other than not allowing any hunters period). My dad brother and myself are really wanting to do some elk and moose hunts in the next few years and those aren't cheap so we're considering guiding some hunters on our farm to help offset the cost. We are not an outfitter but have taken family and friends on our farm numerous times. This place produces some great bucks, consistently seeing and shooting 150"+ bucks. Last year we shot a 203 & 193 with our bows. Then a 183 and 150 with our guns. I believe we could even get you in on a hunt this year yet during our shotgun 1 and 2 seasons! This would be one on one hunting. We basically take you to our stands/blinds, sit with you, and let you shoot what you want. There might be one or two bucks that have strict no shooting rules placed on them but for the most part, it's free game. We figure you're paying for a hunt, you can shoot what you'd like. Please call me if you're interested at 712-540-6985. Thanks!

Leave me a message if I don't answer - I work days but will return the phone call within 24 hours.

Jordan

Looking for elk hunts mainly right now - archery or gun doesn't matter. I'll keep it in mind though Bernie!

What is the situation with non resident tags in your area? Lottery, otc?

It is lottery for NR buck tags but during the shotgun 1 and 2 seasons party hunting is allowed. If hunters wanted to come with us this year they'd be party hunting with us. There are NR doe tags available for our county yet.

So you could have any non-resident get a doe tag and then charge them 10k to guide and let them shoot "your" resident buck? Hmm, that sounds like a bad system.....

One of those rules that has been in place forever and won't change. Hey, we'll take party hunting vs a gun season during the rut. This rule doesn't get abused like you'd think. Almost no residents willing to give up their own tag. We're just looking to do this with a couple hunters one time. After that we're back to hunting ourselves. smile

I believe NM and UT have similar rules where resident landowner tags can be sold to NRs to hunt elk? Kinda the same situation.

The old ladys that get their bucks filled for them every year.....yep nothing quite like Iowa party hunting.....I have observed it. Nothing like trying to run traps when the "hunting party" of 20 trucks and 10 atvs rolls by....

This is exactly what the game wardens are cracking down on. A little Google research show numerous reports. Not to tell anybody what to do but not smart. Besides in party hunt yes you can fill other tags but does not let you claim "200"er " on non resident doe tag. In other words you would still only be allowed to have one expensive doe. There are plenty of do it yourself opportunities, rather public or private. You have to work for it. The cost of non res,tag is scary enough no sense in heavy fine or lost of property or rights.
Sorry about the rant.

Yes, there have been a number of NRs that purchased doe tags and came to hunt and got in trouble tagging bucks or have broke the party hunting rules (ie the tag holder wasn't present or part of the hunt/drive). If a hunter wanted to come next year with us we'd have them go through the lottery process first. If that didn't work then the backup plan would be party hunting with us. Nothing unethical or illegal about party hunting if done properly. Some people just don't like the rule.

So it is legal as a non-resident to shoot a buck when party hunting when a non-resident only holds a doe license?

Good question - I've got a voicemail into the CO to confirm how this is best handled exactly

Correct - the person holding the buck tag has to be an active part of the hunt, whether that's sitting with the hunter in a stand or blind or part of the deer drive. I'm not here to stir the pot (I figured this would to some but that's their problem) just wanting to open the door to other hunters to have an opportunity to hunt IA and help us be able to do a hunt out west that we've been wanting to do.

Here's some snips from the IA DNR hunting regulations to help answer some questions above.

If you're not interested in what he is offering why comment, just move on. You don't even know what he is charging, it may just be $100 to open his
land up to you. If you don't like the party hunting, fine, move on and take your opinion elsewhere.

I like the idea of the hunting party.
When I was a young boy we did alot of deer drives up north. As the years went by and people passed away ,the Tradition was lost in our family. Something I really miss.

I have no problem with what he is doing. However, I'm curious if there are any laws/regs that restrict commercialized hunting on a resident tag in Iowa? I only say this because obviously since he is advertising a paid hunt he would be expected to pay income taxes on it. This would, in essence, be a commercial hunt, wouldn't it?

Not trying to rain on your parade pal, just thinking of the angles DNR might consider.
