I use a product called Tempo. Spray it on or close to go the hive. Once they walk on it and take it on them into the hive, the rest will get it on them and die. Works great on any number of insects and won't harm pets. Been using it for years, little pricy but a little goes a long way!

12 ga. 3-4 quick rounds of #9 should kill most of the hornets as well. And someone with a video camera.

When I was a kid about 10, I thought it would be fun to throw rocks at a nest, Figured I could out run 'em. Didn't work so well and I am a lot slower than I was back then.

Just hit it a couple of times with the shotgun. Best if done with your turkey gun. Just shoot traps loads.
One thing to consider is, have they been a problem to you up to this point? If not, I would just let them be. The only time I have done anything about bees by the house was ones that decided they needed to build a nest in the ground by the house. And by the house I mean right by the blocks. Can not say they bothered us but that is just too close. Dumped about a gallon of gas down the hole. Problem solved. No, I did not throw a match on it.
Bees are very important for pollination. I don't kill them unless they are the mean little sobs that live in the ground where I like to frequent. If they are not within 20' of the house I just leave them alone. I don't like getting tagged 6-10+ times when out of that range but I learn to walk around that area. I know in an hour or two you won't even be able to tell I got stung. That is just me. If you are allergic to them I can see not wanting them around.
Got a funny story about my Dad, a dozer and a jack russel running over a ground nest. That dang dog fight like heck to save my Dad until he tossed her off. The dog was laid up for a couple a few days. Dad did not say how many times he got stung but he drove the dozer out of it.

If you are talking about a hornets nest I usually wait until it gets below freezing just to be safe. Then carefully take it down get some good pics and list on eBay. I wonder if you should make sure that everything inside it is dead first. I would think if you microwaved it for a little while that would do the trick.

Wasps and hornets attack and kill honey bees at the hive. I'd ask that you reconsider giving them a pass. There's likely a local bee keeper that has issues with them.
