I saw signs of rooting on Zimmerman Road in a cornfield today. I took Zimmerman to Heck Hill to Purk and saw 3 wild boar eating in the corner of a cornfield. They were decent size, probably well over 100 pounds.
A bunch of pure Russian stock, wild boar escaped from a farm near St. Paris, Ohio a long while back. One bowyer I know told me his son had killed 27 wild boar, near the Miami river, that were mostly piglets, over the course of a few years. 2 guys that buy birds and eggs from me told me close to 100 hunters got together, a few Winters ago, when there was a light snow and surrounded all the wood lots and exterminated all the boars. Apparently they missed at least a few.
I have hunted wild boar, South of Rio Grande, Ohio with no luck. I have seen a tremendous amounts of damage caused by the boar there. I saw one fast moving piglet for about 2 seconds. I have heard them grunt and squeal and watched them push the grass over, but they were to short to see. I found 3 wallows. The boar rubbed red clay on dozens of trees.
I would really like to shoot a boar.

I hunted below Rio Grande in the Symmes Creek portion of Wayne National Forest for boar. Its been probably 6 or 7 years, since I have been down there. The swamp area there is immense. A friend of mine shot this boar with a 22, while squirrel hunting in Washington County, Ohio by Vincent, Ohio off of Tick Ridge. He estimated the weight as around 450 pounds. Having seen the mount and knowing Don, I think he was probably right. Keith

Don's been retired for a long time. He used to do rodeos, raise rodeo bulls and transport cattle. He has a big mustache sort of like Yosemite Sam. He was one of the best pigeon racers in the US. Hogs not boar. Contrary to legend the pigs running loose in the Americas today are no more pure European than any of us. The boar in Ohio by Rio Grande are supposed to be pure or nearly our Russian genetics, they were released from a game farm, as are the ones that escaped by St. Paris, Ohio. They don't look like the multicolored ferals and crosses from down South. They are dark brown, with black and a little grey mixed in and are uniform in appearance. Keith

When we went down we did find spots that looked like someone had a plow go through in some low spots. Didn't see any though.

I live in wild hog country. My advice is to kill every one you can & if that's not legal to get with your state dnr folks and show them how destructive wild hogs are & get a year round season on them. Hog hunting is fun, I love it but if I could kill ever one of them in Tennessee I would. The destruction they do does not equal the hunting enjoyment. A sounder comes thru and it looks like a side hill plow went thru that hollow. Imagine the erosion that follows. Any planted fields are hog candy. Anybody that wishes for a hog population in their area is only doing so because they are not familiar with what a hog population does to the terrain. And besides that, wild hogs do not produce BACON!
Not as bad as I could be, not as good as I should be.
