I was rummaging through some stuff and found this call I bought back in the 70’s when I was a teenager. I don’t think I ever used it I guess it was just a keepsake. Anyone here ever have one or use it?

I remember those from when I was a kid. About the same time you were, it seems. I'm sure I owned one because I remember messing with the rubber bands. I got a newer updated version from a guy here in Maine who bought out the rights to that call and now markets it as The Maine Woods Deer Call. http://mainewoodsdeercall.com/Maine_Woods_Deer_Call/Welcome.htmlThe guy swears by his call. I've never tried it, too dependent on louder grunt tubes.

I did see the updated version only thing different is the top corner for a lanyard I'm not so sure the guy didn't give me an original Alaskan Deer Call. I'll look next time I'm in the garage. It does sound a lot more like a doe bleat. I'm sure it would be effective tossed in with some grunts.

Thought I was a good trapper until I started trapping coyotes...... Thought I was a good bowhunter until I targeted mature bucks....

They work great for blacktails, not so sure about whitetails or mulies. Waggler, are there any currently-available brands of Alaska deer calls you would recommend? Jim

^^^^^^ James, Here in Wrangell they sell call for deer that is actually a quail call (bobwhite I think) that works on the same principle; a rubber-band between two pieces of wood. I'll check the store in the next day or two and see if they have any around.

Murry Burnham used to make a similar call with a rubber band as a predator call. It was a brown plastic call and must have had a tighter band to produce higher pitch.

Ive shot alot of Sitka Blacktail using similiar very popular in SE Alaska as well as Kodiak island. Some people inprovise using a blueberry leaf between thumbs. Yes bears and wolves also take interest.
