Hello everyone

I have made wax dirt for a few seasons now and it seems that once the weather gets bad and I start using it at sets the coyote numbers dive and I'm sure they are avoiding it. I make the wax dirt in the summer and try to keep the scent contamination to the minimum, then store in plastic tubs with lids. It works as intended and I catch every other type of critter here, but the coyotes seem to hate it despite the fact that blend in the set. Has anyone experienced this and how can you fix it? I'm starting to think using plain dry dirt and remaking sets would be more effective.

I have not had that problem. Are they avoiding it or just not there

Been having the same problem. Fair amount of action until I start using waxed dirt, then zip. I too make it in the summer using solar oven and keep sealed until needed. Will be watching this thread.

I use it from day 1 so if bad weather rolls in I'm good to go then, there was a time a guy did not set before bad weather but with waxed dirt I welcome a reasonable amount of moisture or snow.

Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!

I am trying to elliminate all plastic, I used to use plastic tool boxes to carry n store traps, I always thought the plastic smell affected my catch, I have a couple aluminum tool boxes now, the plastic ones are so old they might not have as much plastic smell to them

Same results as law dog
I store in plastic and steel drums until used ,
Use from day one, blend very little.
Only time I have had any kind of refusal was if it smoked at all during making it.

Same as Law Dog. Use it from day 1, only need to bed the trap once. Unless I make a catch. LOL

Waxed dirt can become musty stored in a container with a lid if all moisture has not been removed. Even when dried dry, water vapors can be seen escaping from the dirt when heated. Have ruined a few buckets of waxed dirt this way.

Way to much emphasis on scent and not enough on the difference of the set and surrounding area . (unnatural) Although I do agree with a lot of what was said .

Never had a issue with wax dirt. I store mine in a 50 gallon plastic drum with a board over top with a couple holes. If you seal it off and it goes hot to cold and gets moisture built up at all in there could cause a moldy musky smell like mentioned already.
