Rather than explain all that here Bob, try Investopedia.com . They give definitions for most everything

To make a judgement about how "bad off" the company is , one would require a lot more information

Negative eps and it's being shorted like crazy.

I'd stay away based on this little bit of information.

My accounts are down tens of thousands over the past couple months. I sold a few companies early to preserve some of my gains, but I'm holding the others and riding this one out. Most of what I own pay decent dividents so I'll let those build up and buy at these lows.

Solid.

I haven't lost 10s of thousands but still down. But still just holding out. Buying more when I have extra cash.

Market is still higher than it was when Trump went in.

But just wonder what is really going on. EVERY time the retailers announce that they are having record sales the economy has been strong. They just announce sales up 6 % over last year.

Since 2009 we have been steadily going up (bull market) now it is time to go down (bear market) the market is doing what the market does. I'm not to alarmed we all know what goes up must come down and that is what is happening. The only thing I hope is the bear is a nice bear and goes back in its den sooner then later.

I've always been of the opinion that if a stock has historically performed well and made positive gains in the last 5+ years or the history of the stock then buy it when you can. The best way to play the stock market is to hold onto a diversified portfolio for at least ten years becaue most everything has positive gains.

Just my opinion. Too many horror stories from day traders and short term gambles for me

I'm sure you're already aware that dividends aren't free...they're deducted form the value of the stock on the "ex-dividend" date. So unless the price of the stock otherwise goes up, dividends deplete the value of the stock.

Simplified answer, stocks are priced on future expectations, not current earnings. Novice investors sell stocks that go up and hold losers in hopes of recovery. The market will quickly recover only if welfarecrats begin to act responsibly.

I agree that dividends decrease the PRICE of a stock but not necessarily the value.

Grackle's point has validity in that over time dividends have provided a bit over 60% of total return in the market. Significantly more than price appreciation.

Dividends can be helpful for liquidity without triggering sales to use in ones cashflow. All of us would like growth and liquidity but there are times in one's life where one is more important than another.
With people living longer today and starting investing programs earlier one is involved in the market for most of one's life if one chooses to enter the market. If one invests in not security assets then knowing if their growth or liquidity assets can determine the better security investment options.

All I know is I would not want to have annuity or whatever type of retirement in stock market now, and be retiring soon. Not good.

Just this morning I have heard a couple of the market "experts" refer to what going on a s the "trump slump". I don't think that is going to sit well with the pres.
Will he tweet something that makes things worse, or can he allow himself to ignore them and let things find a place to settle?

I like to make some more buys at this level, but I'm going to try to wait a while.
