Going to purchase a few new traps for bobcat, yote, & fox and have decided on the MB550s. Should I get closed or offset jaws? Should I get 2 coil or 4 coil & what's the difference and pros/cons on 2 or 4 coil?

you don't need or want the 4 coil, I prefer offset

all I have ever used is the 2 coil offset, but I dont trap in the winter, you may want the 4 coil for busting through any frost if you do.

My MB's are 2 coil, offset. I catch mostly red fox and an occasional coyote so I see no need for 4 coil...the 2 coil are plenty strong and fast in my opinion.

I have a dozen of each, two and four coiled. All are offset. Great traps.

I have a pile of 2 coil offset and they are a good trap. Have caught a pile of fur in them. That being said, all of my future traps will be K9 Extreme Jrs.

Some of my 2 coiled offsets are eight years old & the springs are getting weak. I had a full pad catch slip to a toe catch when I drove up to it. I now add the slightly smaller 4 coil springs when a trap starts to feel soft/weak. I'm trapping large Eastern Coyotes.

The biggest dify is 10 bucks in price and harder on hands when setting. I have had both and see no difference. I took the small coils off and will put them on if I notice a trap getting week. As far as the myth of a 4 coil busting out of frozen ground I say bull. If a trap is froze it's froze and isn't going to fire anyhow. I am sure I just opened a can of worms so let's hear it guys. I still call bull. I trap in some pretty crazy condition and never seen a 4 coil outdo a 2. I have caught 5 bobcat in 2 coils this year from fall to frozen ground and all were full pad or better catches. [Linked Image]
The proof is in the picture......

Wish I had more time to trap....

2 coil offset. You will be highly satisfied.
I have caught raccoons, fox and coyotes in them without a problem even at temps of 4 degrees.
I just got some four coil offsets at a deal but Im removing the extra springs.

Two coil closed jaw held a male wolf. I wish he had self released, but he didn't.

4 coil is too much trap. They are built like a tank. I would advise buying and running a few to make up my mind... But worth every penny I spent

Another thing with 550's, 4 coils can increase pan tension.

Been running 2 coil 550's for 8 yrs and no problems holding yet. Took the lighter mb450-fox springs(.125) off a dozen and replaced with .135's. Then put 2 of the .125's on to make them 4coil- 550's to see the difference and like mentioned above it makes them harder on your hands to set them and also increases pan pressure too!!! I don't recommend 4 coiling.

I have only used 2 coil offset 550's and swear by them for those animals. Not sure what your trapping regulations are but mine are required to have an offset jaw. 4 coils from what I have heard are really only needed if your ground freezes up a lot, that way it can break through easier. 2 coil has more than enough holding power for bobcat, fox, and coyotes. I mainly trap coyotes since my area is flooded with them and I have never had one pull out or nothin.

I trap in Northern Minnesota where everything freezes. I use only two cool (though so use music wire springs) and have no problem.
