The biggest dify is 10 bucks in price and harder on hands when setting. I have had both and see no difference. I took the small coils off and will put them on if I notice a trap getting week. As far as the myth of a 4 coil busting out of frozen ground I say bull. If a trap is froze it's froze and isn't going to fire anyhow. I am sure I just opened a can of worms so let's hear it guys. I still call bull. I trap in some pretty crazy condition and never seen a 4 coil outdo a 2. I have caught 5 bobcat in 2 coils this year from fall to frozen ground and all were full pad or better catches. The proof is in the picture......
Wish I had more time to trap....

Another thing with 550's, 4 coils can increase pan tension.

all I have ever used is the 2 coil offset, but I dont trap in the winter, you may want the 4 coil for busting through any frost if you do. What a 2 coil wont bust through a coyote fox or what not wont spring the trap anyway,

Been running 2 coil 550's for 8 yrs and no problems holding yet. Took the lighter mb450-fox springs(.125) off a dozen and replaced with .135's. Then put 2 of the .125's on to make them 4coil- 550's to see the difference and like mentioned above it makes them harder on your hands to set them and also increases pan pressure too!!! I don't recommend 4 coiling.

Going to purchase a few new traps for bobcat, yote, & fox and have decided on the MB550s. Should I get closed or offset jaws? Should I get 2 coil or 4 coil & what's the difference and pros/cons on 2 or 4 coil? I have only used 2 coil offset 550's and swear by them for those animals. Not sure what your trapping regulations are but mine are required to have an offset jaw. 4 coils from what I have heard are really only needed if your ground freezes up a lot, that way it can break through easier. 2 coil has more than enough holding power for bobcat, fox, and coyotes. I mainly trap coyotes since my area is flooded with them and I have never had one pull out or nothin.
