Butter for smaller areas the size of a 50 cent piece, vegetable oil for others, or mineral spirits, in a drum with saw dust if set up with one.
Rub the butter into the area and let it sit for a bit, then work it with your fingers until it breaks out, if it's terribly thick take a fur brush, not a pet store brush, but a straight needled fur brush designed for pulling mats and burrs out, go over the area in different directions gently.
Clean up the smell with denatured alcohol, it will evaporate leaving no smell and then comb out nice or tumble.
Sorry if my opinions or replies offend you, they are not meant to !

I've used everything from carb cleaner to starting fluid to "Coleman Fuel" (white gas). The only thing to keep in mind is that some of these solvents will remove some of the luster from fur; I figure that's a good trade-off for getting pitch out though. Luster can be restored. Mineral spirits mentioned above might be a good thing to try, I think it may have some oil content which might help maintain luster.

^^^^^^^^ That's what I've also heard, however I just hate seeing a glob of pitch on an otherwise beautiful marten. Have you noticed that the skins with pitch get downgraded? If I see the fur is extremely matted with pitch I think leaving it in is best, if you try to get it out you will definitely remove a lot of fur. I remove smaller pitch globs, especially if they appear to be rather new.

If there is pitch in the guard hair only it wont be downgraded. And it is also easy to remove with solvent without damaging the fur. Pitch matts tight and deep in the underfur will be downgraded. You will also not be able to remove them with solvent without damaging the fur in one way or another. You can however cut them out and sew the pelt.If you are good with a needle and thread and it is not in an area that will affect the character of the pelt when cut out,it most likely will go thru without a downgrade.

I use mayonnaise. Work it into the pitch with your fingers til you feel it break up. Then wipe it out. Don't laugh, it works. Forgot about the old mayonnaise
