With the vast difference in views I believe a separation of States will save us from a civil war but a lot of details will need to be worked out.

Happening here now. The round house in NM (congressman and senators) banned all guns (except NMSP) from entering on certain days. This week numerous NM Sheriff's weren't allowed to enter the chamber because they had guns. They could go into other parts but not where the governor was giving her address even though they are Sheriff's.

It's not a terrible idea, but would be very complicated. Back during civil war I, the dividing lines were pretty simple, north vs south. Now, it's much more broken up and complicated, the dividing lines are city vs city, neighbor vs neighbor, county vs county, etc. And it's not as simple as conservative vs liberal, either. It could be done, but likely it'd be something that happens as a civil war comes to a head, and would be presented as a way to prevent war. A large chunk would have to be given, the current US would likely be the "conservative" side (even though it's really not that simple, but lets just play along here), and the new country would be the "liberal side". It would likely be not quite a 50/50 split, but more like 60/40 with the current US getting the bigger part. While the "liberal" side currently lives in cities and is geographically small, they still constitute about half of the countries population.

This is the 2016 map by county. It shows well how concentrated the liberal population is. It's obvious they aren't concentrated in any one area, so both sides would have to agree to move to their respective new countries.
