Spot On.
I have that book and I use his methods. It all makes sense when you think about.

Neat as can be how that fox sifted duff over that fresh dirt to blend it all in.

I don't guess I understand how a big pile of dirt on the left (or the right) blends in at all. I don't doubt that it works but it is as unnatural as it can be, Maybe I just don't understand the term "blended".

The fresh dirt mound kind of looks like a gopher mound. And It also acts as a guide and causes the coyote to step to the right.

I trap In a lot of hay ground and a small trap pattern right In front of a open hole seems to have the critter stepping to one side or the other of that unnatural looking spot.
Kind of like Zaggers pipe set. I think he always blends In that trap pattern. Like you would a flat set or a post set.

Lots of critters are caught In conventional open dirt holes but I wonder just how many are being missed. You don't know because some conditions we trap under don't allow for tracks.
In a large pattern like say several feet In size your still blending In that trap location since It's such a big pattern and every thing looks the same.

I guess. My notion of blended is the set looks like you was never there. The set is blended not the trap cover, but I see what you are saying, kinda,

One of Jeff Dunlaps comments on his sets their either blended in or it a disaster area. This was from one of the F&T tv episodes last fall.

I talked to other trapper this fall and he kind of put it this way to me. We have moles around here and coyote are used to seeing these and know fresh dirt might look the same. So if you blend in your set it might make catches go up. Haven't put it to test yet with this weather we've had lately I have not went back out.
