Don't skimp on chain. Be leery of the cheap stuff. I bought a box of heavy chain off ebay and the
"welding" on the links was so poor I could easily pry open!

I have been using the #5 chain from MTP and crunch proof swivels on my wolf traps. Swivels and other connections are welded shut. No issues or signs of failure so far. My gear is anchored solid, no drags.

Last wolf we got last weekend took 10' chain and a rebar grapple for quite a hike before he hooked up. With the little bit of snow around here it took a while to find. Walking up to him, he took off again and went another 50 yds. Wide open bog and the chain wouldn't hook up on the basketball grass. I think I'm going to add another 10' chain to the traps I am using in these wide open areas. With the little snow it is hard to hide a big pole and makes tracking difficult. Old timer told said all he ever used in areas like this was 20' chain and steel grapple, so will see how that goes.

Use 13 feet 880 lb rated chain from AIH or lowes with last 16 inches folded back and secured to make big enuff loop to put trap through Hate clevises. Use wolf swivel at trap and one 24 inches up chain all welded. Build own drags big and heavy most the time out of well pipe and rebar and they will still drag them around. Try to anchor solid if possible but if not use drags.

Most are drags are left on line year round and piled up in areas that we use year after year. You can see drag in sled [Linked Image]

I started making my chain set ups with a quick repair link that attaches to the trap. That way it's easy to swap out a trap if needed or need to reconfigure something, just release the trap and switch it out. Also, I like to have a couple chain links between the trap and the first swivel. Sometimes depending on conditions it's a pain to bed the trap solid if it's rocking around on that fat swivel. A couple chain links gets it out from under the trap.

Agreed on moving that first swivel out a couple links for that exact reason. I should mention that I reach my anchor many times by adding a 20’ Shot of 1/8” cable, or two, to bridge the distance. It works well for me.

Hey Rusty, I personally like 10' of 2/0 straight link chain with at least 2 swivels all welded j-hooks. One at the trap and one mid chain with a 1/4" quick link on the end. Haven't seen the need for shock springs so haven't used them myself. Even 10' on a grapple can get pretty short quick.
