Those things are neater than a train wreck. A local club used to have a really big one mounted on a flatbed that they took to the local fairs. It came from a cotton gin from Arizona. They said that it could be heard for 10 miles when it was running.
The cranks were designed to disengage if there was a backfire or if compression caused the engine to spin backwards. They didn't always work as designed I guess.

I got thrown out of the boat more then once cranking an old Lister diesel into life that had the bar missing between the decompression valves of the cylinders. Brings back memories seeing these old tickers.
