Whats it called when I forgot to take the safeys off #330, more than once, lol. Or the time I slipped the swivel on backwards on my slider cable and when I checked the next morning the beaver had a hole dug out of the bank 1/2 the size of a truck. And I still had him, proves even a fool can catch something, lol. For me that's called "every season"

They know where an animal will step before it steps there. If someone spends enough time trapping or hunting an animal they start thinking like that animal and picking up on its behaviour and habits but most importantly its weakness. Exploiting an animals weakness is what puts fur on stretchers. A knowledgeable trapper should have their sets fine tuned to the simplest form and be able to set it quickly in the best location possible.

It's easy, all the knowledgeable trappers have a book or video for sale, or sell instruction. Yup, only way to tell is if they sell...

When I started trapping back in the 60s the ones that knew how wouldn't tell you anything,,but the ones that didn't know squat, would tell you all about it. Ain't that the truth lol. I feel as though the OP's question is redundant, get out there in the mix of things and you'll know. If you catch critters that is.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

One that has been there and done that, can tell through a pretty short amount of conversation
"Nothing I like to do pays well." True Grit
"Revenge is in the hands of God, not mine." Revenant.

A knowledgeable trapper (and a lot of them on this forum) understand animal instincts and behaviors first and then execute tactical sets to capitalize on those instincts. When I make a post or send a PM, the responses I receive seem so intuitive after the fact, but I might not have landed in that place on my own. I’ve been trapping for over 40 years and learn and try something new every day, knowledge comes from making mistakes and then not repeating them. Great response, definitely broadened my thought on trapping as well.
