How is it determined at which weight class a wrestling match starts at?

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

It probably depends on where your at. When I wrestled in high school matchs started with the lightest and ended with the heavyweights, they changed that rule before my senior year and put all wt. classes in a hat and one was randomly picked. The picked wt. is the one they start with.

I am currently wrestling in high school. In college matches it always starts at the lightest weight and goes to the heaviest.

In high school I have seen it done tons of different ways. A bunch of pieces of laminated paper thrown into a hat and drawn, both coaches decide on weight together, Home coach usually draws. I even saw a younger referee have an app on his phone that randomly picked a weight, and another reff had a wheel that was spun with weights on them, whatever weight it stopped at was the weight wrestled. It's always done fairly.

It’s usually just a random draw.

Use to be light to heavy in single matches. At multi matches it use to be heavies on one mat, middle at on one, and lights on another. Then you would let mats be used by other weights as one group or the other was finished to speed up process.

It's been a few years for me though. So maybe things have changed.

It does not always start at the lowest weight class in college it is at random draw on where it starts on dual nights. At tournaments it does start at lowest weight.

I believe, the reason it became random was that often... team matches resulted in the Heavy Weight needing to win his match for the team dual victory. It always seemed that during that last match, no one remembered that if the 103lb or 152lb would've won their match- the team wouldn't be in this position.
