Good size mink. I get bigger ones fairly common but this one is really fat and has very thick glossy fur. I like mink fur. I just don’t like skinning them.

Ten lynx again this last trip. The big white one on the left is really heavy. One of the nicest ones I’ve ever caught for size and fur quality, I think it will go on my moms sewing room wall.

My sled loaded with a moose this morning at around 3am. The school is having a chef come up to do some workshops and a community feast this week. Moose is on the menu. I was on my way out to set a Few wolf traps on some fresh sign yesterday evening and got the moose I needed for the school at the last minute. I passed out some other moose during the week until I found the right one I wanted. After I finished the moose I laid it out on the clean hard packed snow for a couple hours and let it bleed and cool off. I went and set a few wolf traps in the direction of the fresh wolf sign but didn’t have the time or patience to travel the extra 40 km round trip to get right to the epic pee post I seen earlier in the day when I wasn’t hauling any wolf traps around. Then I went back to the moose and loaded it up nice and neat for the 86 km pull to town. I set 4 1/8 snares with sure locks plus 2 750s on rebar drags at the fresh gut pile. One trap is located in the picture of the trail up the bank. I dragged the moose down the hill in 4 loads on a tarp. I saved the hide as well with no cuts. It’s in the blue wrapped up tarp. Little tired today but glad I got things done and picked up a load of fur

No top lot for lynx this year. My highest is in the third lot and my highest Marten are in the second lot. Hope for a good sale. I’m not getting my hopes up though.

Ten lynx in one trip? That is pretty amazing.

Mink are stinky buggers. My least favorite to skin because of that.

I always thought that if I was born a couple/three centuries ago - I would have been the guy in the settlement that provided meat to everybody. Cool to think there are still places where people do that.

I got 10 lynx two trips in a row. I wish it was like that all winter. I provide meat to a lot of people, mostly elders, widows, single moms and Families down on their luck. Had I been born 2-3 centuries ago my late great grandmother said I would be allowed 3 wives to keep up with cutting meat and handling fur. Imagine that. I’m always trying to get the most for my time and gas money so if I have freezer room for 4 caribou but I have room in my boat for 10 then a lot of people will get some meat when I get home. A simple “meat to give away” message on Facebook reaches aLot of people who are craving country food. I was raised to give away half of our country food.elders get the best pieces.

Reminds me of a moose hunt a few years back. I was asked to hunt a moose for an elders 95th birthday celebration. The family had funds to give me $500 towards gas and supplies but since I was already planning a wolf hunt I said 20 gallons of gas would be enough. I picked up 10 more gallons on my own plus grub etc. I looked around the Richardson’s all day in areas known to hold 10-12 moose but not a moose to be found until a last hope creek was checked. I was lucky and there was a single old cow there. I got it and was happy to give it to the family who then offered me some cash. I didn’t take it. The next two trips to the gut pile resulted in two big male wolverine shot right at the site, a near miss on a third wolverine I tracked away from the creek and a monster old female wolf tracked from the gut pile. Good deeds and generosity always come back to you in one way or the other.

I used to have deals set up with a lot of people. 1 guy used to give me 2 boxes of shells every spring for 20 geese and 3 swans. Some elders who have passed used to fund a whole trip and I’d give them everything I got on the trip. Some would skin 100 rats in exchange for 2 whole beavers. I knew all the elders favorites and would try to make sure they had what they wanted most. Most of my elder friends have passed on but I still have a few here with us. Sharing like this has always been an honour for me and gives me a feeling of satisfaction and pride like nothing else. I’m teaching my kids the same way I was taught.

No reason you can't do that today, WH. Just have to be more successful.

Ryan - just love your three posts above. Very, very cool life you have. What I wouldn't give to come hang out with you for a stretch, and just help, and observe...

Martentrapper - in Homer, Alaska? Things are pretty restrictive around here. I can kill lots of bear to hand out, and that is about it! But I suppose I could go up north and get a couple moose and caribou and divvy it out. Yeah - I could do that.

I DO do this quite a bit with fish around here. Just not enough to really satisfy me.

I got to get all dressed up for one of my best friends wedding this past Saturday. Checked all traps the day before all for one mink. The morning after the wedding I headed back to the line and pulled some sets and set a few more. I ended up picking up wolverine #4 that day. Thought I’d share a couple pics of me and Morgan

MorgAn caught her second lynx. White toes to boot. Double snare pen that I set one side of and she did the other side. Her side caught.
