A chain isn't necessary for all anchors, and likely not for a kayak. For the one I keep in FL, I just use a 2 lb dumbbell. X2 He's not anchoring a 20 ft lund in 300 foot water . LOL some you guys crack me up. I use a coyote drag on a retractable dog leash.

My kayak's anchor is a piece of clothsline pole in the shape of a "T", probably weighs about 5 pounds. The rope is some piece of sash cord I had laying around, and the knot is just a square knot. I made the whole setup in about 5 minutes right before the first time I took it out in the river. It holds my kayak in the river in 8 feet of water max just fine, but your mileage may vary.
