Had a Doberman that was a terror on getting into the garbage. Tried the hot peppered eggs, mouse traps and dosed in Tabasco sauce to no avail. Finally put a fence charger in the other room and a wire around the top of the trash can with a mat of rabbit wire the trash can sat on. One shot was all it took and she would run if you picked up the trash can. Got the ex wife twice before got the dog though.

The beagle was an expert food thief, an evil genius when it came to food. Nothing was safe; dog food left in bowls, leftovers left on the counter... ROTFLMAO! Sounds like every Beagle ever whelped, certainly like every Beagle I ever kept! I like the cubby set idea for the little dog. But, Labs ain't stupid, gonna have to make it solid and heavy.

My lab got In the garbage just once. I laid a right hook on his snout the basement door was open. He rolled down the steps and never got In the garbage again. The kids were all over dad they thought I killed old baron. He laid on the floor for a bit opened one eye thumped his tail a bit and we were good to go.

Pig headed thief's~ LOL i swear the beagle would put the lab up to stuff. There is no way that little beagle could reach a pizza box on the counter. Yet we'd come home to it pulled down and torn up with all the leftover pizza missing. Our gentle giant of a lab would never do anything like that on his own. He would never take food out of the other dogs bowl or anything like that. We'd come home to that mess and the beagle had that same look that Jerry's dog does. As if to say, Yeah, I ate the pizza, so what." The lab would be hiding in his kennel looking guilty as sin. I always wondered how the beagle talked him into it.
Eh...wot?

I know the little dog isnt really stupid, she is however stubborn, and set in her ways from 10 years of being the only dog and the food dish pretty much always had food in it. It was never a problem, she didn't overeat, usually. Now she is about 12 years old and deaf or nearly deaf. A lot of times I have to give her hand signals for when I want her to kennel and to go outside. When she is outside and I want her to come in, sometimes I have to go out where she can see me and point to the door.
The lab is really a great dog but has a medical issue basically has pretty severe arthritis and is on a med that makes her hungrier and thirstier than normal. She knows she shouldn't eat from the little bowl. And if you catch her even near it gets that super guilty look. When you raise your voice at her she just about looks like she might cry, it is kind of funny.
I am thinking the 10 minutes to eat twice a day might be way to go with this. The lab only needs two minutes if that. The lab is really easy to train she just seems to want to do what you want. The little dog was never as easy to train but was a lot easier when she could hear. I appreciate the HELPFUL COMMENTS, and FUNNY STORIES.

The lab will sit and look at me until she sees I am looking at her, then she winks at me. I would really like to know what she is thinking about when she does that.

A lot of eating habits start with the size and way the litter is raised, in a big litter competitive eating is a must, take away the litter mates and the habit is still there it's a taught behavior

The lab will sit and look at me until she sees I am looking at her, then she winks at me. I would really like to know what she is thinking about when she does that. You're supposed to wink back. How are they going to know who is helpful and nice when they take over the world? That's their signal. We couldn't figure out for the longest time why our dog wasn't eating much. Then we set up a camera in the kitchen. Caught the MIL feeding him everything a dog desired. Dang dog din't have room for any dog food. The icing on the cake was we though we had it stopped. We ate dinner one night and the wife and I went out on the back porch. I saw the MIL thru the window moving around in the kitchen. She kept bending over, and going to the stove. I went to the door and looked in. She was taking rigatoni one by one and feeding them to him. Every time she went to the stove she would look at the window to see if we were watching. I told the wife you gotta see this. She came over.... MIL looked around and proceeded to take the whole pot of rigatoni and put it on the floor. The dog looked and sounded like it was a pig at the trough. I don't think I've ever heard my wife yell at her mom or say some of the words she did ever again. So ours wasn't a dog training problem... Ours was a human training problem.
