Mudhole.com has everything you need. I built me a 20-40# 8’ rod to top with a Raptor MXJ last spring and caught a 40 lbs bluefin out of California with it last June. A lot of fun to build and fish with

I built my own rod wrapper. turn it by hand. Works fine. Just to build a few for yourself friends and family you don't need a lot of expensive stuff. I hot glue guides on before wrapping. works good. Makes it easy to move one a bit so they are lined up. The wrap is what actually secures them. It is hard to find good catfish and spoonbill rods. Those hollow rods just don't hold up. I buy solid fiberglass from Janns. If you want lighter and hollow, they sell some high end blanks also. This is what I built for wrapping. I use upholstery thread. Will just about cut your hand if you break it its so strong. springs are to put tension on the spool so wraps are tight. Coydog you could easy use a jig like this to replace the top half of a rod. just buy a joint for making a two piece rod and the appropriate blank or cannibalize an old pole you already have. sorry about the dust haven't used it in at least a year. a dowel rod is holding the spool through the center so it can turn even though you cant see it.

rodbuildingforum is the place to be if you get serious about it mudhole is a good source, I also order a good bit from Batson there was also a small place in louisiana that i used to get odds and ends from b/c they had good shipping on small stuff.
so many doo dads out there - the only one I'd really suggest for getting started is a basic rod dryer - simple motor and stand for rotating the rod while the finish dries on your wraps. a basic handwrapper can be helpful too - if you get into - you can makeshift one good enough with some household stuff to get started and determine if you want to continue
mudhole also carries some decent "budget" components that can get you started without spending a fortune

ranger i just put polyurethane on mine. use a piece of an old wash cloth. hang it from the ceiling by the tip. tightens and strengthens the wrap just fine. if your building something for function you don't need a dryer either. a piece of rag and polyurethane is far from awful.

just different ways of skinning the same cat. I use a two part finish (most of the time) only on the wraps, not the whole rod.
I did refinish a bamboo rod for a fella once, and did poly the whole thing, but that was before wrapping the guides. after I added the guides i just poly'd the wraps with a small brush

Built many surf rods and a few light spinniing rods. Don't skimp on the reel seat.
