By the looks of those they are probably Dallia pectoratis were as the ones in the mudminnows of the Hudson Bay drainage are Umbra limi these have the tiger strips patterns.

Down south here you can find them anywhere there is a geothermal fault where the water comes up. Some call them artesian wells depending on local ground water temps it can be warm +10c vs 0c for the ground water. With isostatic rebound up there Jeff there must be some of those springs around flowing all the time. Geological rock Miners always look for them because the water is analyzed for rare mineral content that they may hold flowing out of the earth under them.
The warm ground water grows a different algae that the minnows eat, and with their air gulping they can stay alive through the winter.
