First off, I don't believe in the word fair. I'd gauge my potential customers and charge the rich trophy trappers as much as I can get away with. The poor kids; I would do it cheap.
Pay attention to what they drive up in and how Eddie Baurer their cloths are.

Forty years ago when I trapped to many 'coon. The local fur buyer would skin for $1 & stretch for a $1.

In 2019 I would do it this way. Value of the fur has nothing to do with the cost to put-up. What do I need to make per hour determines the charge. Example if I want $30 per hour and can do two foxes in an hour the charge, paid up front, would be $15 for each fox. I would also have a minimum charge, maybe $15 - $30 for me to touch (put-up) your animal. Bring me a single fox it will cost you $30. Bring me two foxes and it will cost you $30.

Me and Dirt think a lot alike. I don't think I have ever disagreed with his posts. Why in the world would it have to do with what the fur is worth?

I learned how to trap, skin and put up fur at a young age.Until I was able to buy my own trapline,I got rights to trap a lot of registered ground as an 02 by agreeing to put up fur for the 01 trappers.

How hard do you have to pull to skin a musket?

When beaver prices were decent I paid a helper $5 for the put up. Did my own skinning.

And way back in the early 90's I split 50-50 with a buddy of mine; He did the skinning and put-up, and I did the trapping. We were both happy...he stayed dry and I got all the fun.

BTW, currently for my section of beaver (which has nice castor) I would skin and put up anybody's beaver just for the carcass/castor. No kits though.

Gotta ask what’s a rich trophy trapper?

They look just like sport hunters and fishermen. Money is not relevant. Take some of it.

I'm not doing a coyote for less than 15.
A beaver no less than 15.
Badger 10
Raccoon 5
. And they better be well handled in the field

Rich, trophy trapper, OK. They're around every corner pulling up in their Cadillac Escalades. The trappers that do have money and you spot it have money for a reason and like myself
they don't have it by getting gouged by people.

Newt, if your hiring somebody to put up your fur my advice is pay by the hour. takes me 45 minutes to go from dead beaver to stretched. I would want more than the plew is worth. If your employee has any work ethic at all what you lose on him putting up your beaver you will recoup on stuff like rats paying hourly.

if your considering doing others fur maybe part of your pay could be casters. which brings me to another question. cost of carcass disposal. might want to charge another buck or two for disposal.

To skin, flesh and put a muskrat on a stretcher is worth $1. A few year back I did a 100 rats for a friend for $1/rat and he ended up with a $14.35 average. Was it worth the $1/rat? I don't care who you are, you aren't skinning fleshing and putting more than ten rats up an hour. So is $10/hour worth it? Not really

They are the same guys that use taxidermist to skin, tan and mount their trophies. Most of those places gouge them. If they didn't want to lose money, why are trapping and paying somebody to skin and put up their trophies?
