I usually throw a trap or two here and there later in the spring but thought I would try it early this year. I'm in a new creek that is running faster then I would like. My question is have any of you had any luck in faster moving water and this time of year? I'm tucked right up close to the bank and under heavy grass that hangs over and in the water.

Golden river shiners seem to like frothy water and snow banks. Not much use for them until first week in may when season opens. Hard to keep alive that long.

I leave mine in the creek all the time just take what I feel I might use. The creek is the best place I found to leave them through the season.

^ yep me too but water is moving a little faster this time of year. It is a wider creek then what I like to be in also. I wanted to try it to see if anything is in there. We will see, I might go check them today if I have time. I like those 2 or 4 feet wide creeks to trap them in, this one is about 12 feet wide and not sure if there is any holes in it since I never have trapped it before.

I had mine in a very small beaver pond that had lots of minnows in it. I checked it and only had a dozen or so in it so I put it back in. Next morning I checked it and had about 18 of the black lizards with yellow spots. No minnows left. Them lizards must be able to breathe under water or they can hold their breath for a long time. Not a one of them was dead.

Tucked up close to the bank and under heavy grass is a good location in fast water. Minnows and other fish stay in areas like that to avoid fighting the current. I used to seine creeks for minnows several times a week. I could catch more fish, quicker in high water, with a fast current, by just working over hanging banks, then I could in pools in normal or low water conditions. Fish concentrate in small areas out of the current, when the water is fast.

Those are newts, a type of salamander. Salamanders are amphibians. Newts have a larval stage that lives in water. Most newts then become efts, which live on land, before returning to water as adults newts, to breed.

Thank you.

That got me curious so I did a search. They are Ambystoma maculatum.

I now try to keep my traps in the creeks. under the edges or in the pools.
