Fat colored steers are bringing 1.25 to 1.31 per pound on the hoof at Waverly sale barn. So at 1350x1.28 avg.=1728 then add 800 for processing is 2528, figuring hanging weight 1350x.65percent for average yield=877.5 the 2528/877.5=2.88 per pound. This assuming these are grain feed.

Do not buy grass fed beef if you are not familiar with it. It will be a different experience eating grass finished beef if you are accustomed to grain finished.

There are absolutely no proven health benefits to grass finished beef. None. Its nothing more than a new catch phrase made up to sell more expensive beef to the uneducated. Some people like it. Most don’t. There are studies that “prove” that grain finished beef is healthier. I don’t believe that either. Knew this was coming when I posted. You may be right M.Magis, I eat a lot of corn fed beef too, but am trying to transition to grass fed for the health benefits. Nothing is certain, but we do know that grass fed beef is higher in conjugated linoleic acid, which is a cancer fighter. It's higher in omega 3 fatty acids, which are critical for heart health, brain health, and reduce risk of cancer. Healthline.com states that the Western diet has too few omega 3 fatty acids and too many omega 6 fatty acids. Grain fed beef is loaded with omega-6 fatty acids, which are believed to cause inflammation and promote cancer. Grazing animals have been around for millenia surviving on pasture. Only in the past half century or so we've confined cattle and fed them grain to fatten them up, led by the U.S.. And the U.S. has the 6th highest cancer rate in the world. Why take the chance?

What I’ve had of grass fed beef it wouldn’t make good hamburger, but I’ve heard people rave about it. If you really what to get technical about corn fed beef is grass fed, because corn is a grass. Corn is a grass. If cattle are fed the entire plant, i would agree. But they're typically only fed the seeds.

I have stated this before huge difference in grass fed and grass fat..... very very few true grass fat animals..
the only place i know where to get one is buy a barren heifer out west river that has been feeding on hard buffalo grass. im one that will rave about it its marbled has 1 to 1 1/2 back fat.. hard to come by... havent got one for a few years been eatin corn fat . agreed most grass fed beef on market isnt fit for burger
The only place you find free cheese is in a mousetrap !

Do not buy grass fed beef if you are not familiar with it. It will be a different experience eating grass finished beef if you are accustomed to grain finished. I know nothing about raising beef, other than I really enjoy a well marbled steak. A friend fed me a steak from a steer he had raised, it was grass/brush fed. I thought it tasted pretty similar to blacktail; not at all bad, but definitely different than a store bought beef steak.

Bother-in law raises cattle says it is less hassle to buy his beef then butcher his own cattle with the way the prices are, that seems crazy to me. We do a pig once or twice a year that more affordable and we have a great place that has leaner hogs then other places that marble the fat into the meat.
Was born in a Big City Will die in the Country OK with that!
