How about those Sterling MJ 600's .. Heck of a Trap.. Just saying... ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2019/03/full-39399-4719-dscf0043.jpg) Yes they are a heck of a trap. 44mag that is a new 600, they are still being made today 45 years after the first ones. Not sure about the start date of the 650s. I'd bet Law Dog's new farm on the fact that the 650 came after the 600. Now if Bill was smart enough to call it the Duke 555 we'd have nothing to complain about.

I have watched this for a bit. Personally I like mtp. I have had no problem ordering from them. They are top notch.
I have also ordered from fnt. They are also top notch. Many good things to say about them.
About the duke trap thing. They offer a trap that allows most trappers to get in this game. Most people can not spend 200$ for a dozen traps to get started. There will be a lull in the purchases of the mtp550 at this time of year. People will buy the new trap that came out. Most will do that. We buy them to see what they will do.
It will lower their sale for a couple months, then they will go back to normal sales. There will always be people that need traps at a lower price. They are a gate way trap. They get you into it then you buy from Tim....

The heck is going on in here. Push ups, lots of push ups. Well then. Let’s get to it...surely we have to win! The heck is going on in here. Last I knew John, we was trying to impeach the beav for bi-colluding. Not sure what it is, but it sounds dirty. Bi-colluding...that sounds like it’s not allowed on here. Sounds so Californiaish. Lol.

I support MTP and love the 550 for coyote and fox trapping in my area they are great folks with amazing customer service. I truly wish they made a 1.5 trap. The 450 is also a great trap but I don't want a 450 for rats and coons just a good old 1.5 trap with standard or double jaws made by MTP. If this ever happens and the price is somewhat reasonable my whole line of footholds will be made by MTP. Before anyone goes off on me I know MTP bought Bridger but I want a standard trigger and pan design.

Good morning trappers. One thing that WadeRyan and I can certainly agree on is that if Duke had called the trap a 555, or 525, or 575 it wouldn't have been such an issue. We don't want the two traps confused. If folks will look back at my post on page 6, my complaint was not that Duke was making this trap, that is their call not mine. My complaint was that Minnesota Trapline Products has been one of Duke largest dealers since day one and in my opinion this was not the proper way to treat a dealer who had represented you well for decades.

To address the difference between the current 550 situation and the MB-650 - MJ-600 of the past:
First and most importantly, I greatly admire and respect Glen Sterling. A very, very smart man that was way ahead of his time in product development. About 25 or so years ago I was selling a lot of MJ-600's as fast as I could get my hands on them in fact. I was buying them through M&M Furs, Melvin Fluth who I believe at the time was the only distributor. We could never get enough to satisfy the demand but we would get in 20 or so dozen a week which were sold in advance. Then we hit a spell for well over a year that we couldn't get any and M&M Fur said they weren't being made. I did contact Glen at that time and tried to buy the name and rights but we were a long way apart on what he wanted and what I thought I could afford to pay. For those of you that are too young to remember this was a time when fur was worth nothing, trap supply dealers were dropping like flies, and anti fur activists were at their peak. In retrospect I should have bought the MJ-600 for Glen's asking price but at that point in the trade it was hard to look ahead a year much less 25 years and I had a young family to feed and wasn't in the position to take big risks.
After not having any MJ-600's to sell for over a year we decided to go ahead and produce a trap of that size. To me the strong point of the MJ-600 and the unique feature of it was the pan/dog set up. We stayed far away from that feature out of respect for Mr. Sterling. I would much rather have the MJ-600 pan/dog set up than what we have on the MB-650 but I didn't want to cross that line. There were other traps that we were selling at the time like the Northwoods #4 that had cast jaws and wire levers so we felt as long as we stayed away from the Sterling pan/dog set up that we were not infringing on their design. If I offended Mr. Sterling or crossed a line I do apologize, it was certainly not my intent. If Glen feels that I owe him a royalty I would discuss it with him as the only thing that we get out of life with is our reputation and I take that seriously. I don't feel as though we've cost Mr. Sterling any sales as his traps have always sold faster than he can make them. I would buy a truck load of them today if they were available. It is a fantastic product that I have personally used. Tim

Great post Tim! Thank you and the Caven family for your contributions to the trapping industry.

This is why I have switched over to all MB and Bridger Traps. Tim is a straight up guy. Makes a quality product, is honest, and stands behind his work. I don’t care who copies his traps, I’m not changing. Minnesota Trapline what I’m using.
If traps work like the Antis say......I would have no fingers.

I really don't understand all the commotion. Trap designers have been copying each other since the first mountain man hammered out the first longspring trap centuries ago. Aren't nearly all the DPs on the market today basically knock offs of the Griz Getrz? Where was all this commotion a few years ago when Duke cloned the Bridger #2 square jaw? Aren't Bridger traps even also owned by Caven's these days? Everyone has different needs... for live market trapping I prefer a double laminated #2 trap... something Duke does not offer, but Cavens do, so if I needed new Bridger style traps I would order the #2 Canadian jaw from Caven as opposed to the unmodified #2 from Duke. Aren't the MB650s knockoffs of the MJ600?? Where was the commotion then? As far as the name goes, Caven's did NOT come up with the 550 name. Long before MBs there were Heimbrock 550s, and Helfriech 550s. Here's a Heimbrock. Here's a Helfriech. I have never cared for MB550s. I might try a Duke version and see if I like it any better. If not, I'll stick with my Bridger and/or Duke #2s. Both Caven and Duke has and do do a lot for the trapping community, and cutting off business from either one of them is just silly. If you love the MB550s, just keep on buying them, problem solved.

I can see why someone would want to copy them. I have quite a few of them but they were always picked up with the inevitable Cabelas gift cards I get from well meaning friends and family. They were the nicest traps in my opinion that they had on the shelf so I’ve bought a few here and there over the last six years. I was talking about them with 10bands yesterday while “helping” on his water line. I told him I hate to admit it because I gravitate towards big heavy 4 coiled laminated dogless tank traps, but the mb550’s are one of the few traps I own that I take out of the box, wash, wax, put in the ground and catch coyotes, fox, and badgers. No adjustments other than bending the dog slightly. They just work. I’ve been thinking about standardizing my hardware. If I had nothing but mb550’s in the ground I would sleep very well.

Angela, I disagree with your post and welcome a good discussion. Exactly how are you equating the similarity between the Caven's and the Duke's?
